GMail app - How do I open an attachment?

I told the SF to share a contact via GMail. It mailed a VCF file, so far so good, but how does the recipient open it on the SanFran. The attachment icon doesn't respond to single/double tap and there's no attachment handling in the menu as I can see.

So how do I open an attachment, or respond to a mailed VCF ?

I think this is not supported natively in Android. I was having some trouble downloading certain file types and I only found a solution by downloading an paid app from the Market - Download Buddy.

Well thart is odd. Ater all, it's Android's own method of sharing a contact. Surely they must have anticipated the 'sharee' needing to receive the file.

And why does the Google Mail client even show that there is an attachment if it has no ability to either open or save it. All seems very odd to me.

To import it yo need to go to the contacts screen hit menu and choose import from sd card. That will import contacts from any vcf files on the sd card.

How you get it from gmail to your sd card is another matter... I don't use gmail so I don't know.

Yes, I tried using the 'Contact's import' feature hoping that attachments might be quietly stored in some indexed corner of the SD card - Nothing revealed itself though.

I'm still perplexed at the omission of an attachment open or save feature in the GMail app.

Just did a test of this and sent a contact via gmail to the gf's gmail account, on her SF i opened gmail then opened the message with the vcf attachment and next to it was a download button, when this is selected it asks if i want toi import the Vcard data :D

Well this is getting more curious - I did see the option to share a contact via SMS but now even that option appears to have disappeared.

just use barcodes apps :D

Maybe our GMail apps are different?

All I see on my received message are a couple of paperclips, neither of which responds to touch/tap. No attachment related menu items.

I have no idea whether system apps are automatically updated nor have seen a manual update option for system apps.

I seem to remember last time i had problems downloading an attachment in the Gmail app that the only solution was to use the browser and go to GMail on the web where i was able to download the attachment.

I think it might, as I'm on Google Mail version 1.30

Hmm, a newer version of Google Mail doesn't seem to be in the Market or at AppBrain? How are system apps kept updated?

You need to be on a 2.2 rom for the latest version, if you are go to the following link on your phone and you can install from there :D you can also browse the site on your pc :D

I have been trying Blackmoon AttachSave Lite which claims to enable download of any attachment via a 'preview' button that it adds to the GMail app. However, so far, it's refusing to allow download of my '.vcf' contacts file attachment, complaining that no application supports it. Not quite what I expected but will explore further.
