Nandroid restore on other Blade handset?

Recommended Posts

My brother has got a blade and he'd like it set up as close as possible as I have mine.

Are there any ways to make that happen quicker? Would I be able to restore a nandroid backup from my phone on his?

(I know a lot of the apps I have installed won't work, I just want all of the other stuff I've changed to transfer quickly)

Try it?

Install the same version of clockwork to both phones - perform a nandroid backup, place the SD in the other phone - perform a nandroid restore.

If you copy ALL of the contents of the SD then surely should also be able to get the apps running?

Im just guessing here!

Yeah would work. It would include all accounts and everything. As Ron said, a few apps also store some things on the SD so you might want to copy them too.

Wait why do you think apps wouldn't work? Certainly he would be legally (and morally) expected to pay for any apps but they will all get copied anyway.

You will not be able to remove your google account without doing a factory reset which will remove everything you have set up anyway.

I set up my rom with all the apps I like and all the settings done (widgets in place etc) before making the google account and then delete my wifi setting before I do a nandroid. This way I can distribute it amongst all my friends phones also.

I think if you clear data for all gapps it works.

Another option is to change your google password on your desktop then next time you use something like gmail it prompts you to enter your account again.

Thanks targetbsp!

Almost seemed like I might as well have started from scratch until you pointed that out. On the matter of apps though, surley even the free ones won't work on his phone? I thought they had some sort of signature binding it to your handset?

Hi cacoe - i posted asking about this idea a while back - wanting to transfer my phone set up to my sister in law's phone (she lives on the other side of the country and I don't see her too often)

In the event I came to the same conclusion - that the only difficulty would be around google acocunt details

I still haven't seen her since then and won't be seeing her for a few weeks yet, but it would be great if you could post back and let me know how you get on

I suspect that there may be problems with apps, though then again there may not be:

1 if I have my phone set to accept non market apps it doesn't seem to worry much what's on there

2 now that the market online (through a web browser on a real-life computer) allows you to choose all the apps you want to install, so you could simply get your brother to go online logged on as himself and pick all the same apps you have installed, in which case the phone should be happy enough either to reinstall them or just to stick with those it has

IronDoc's suggestion to clear gapps data sounds sensible, as does targetbsp's

I think the only way to be sure is to try it

What I was gonna do was:

using astro or similar navigate to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ and copy a whole folder to my pc (using the usb cable, wireless ftp, dropbox or whatever) then stick it on the other phone in the same place, then just go into clockwork on the second phone, backup to that in clockwork and see what happens

Might make sense to back up the other phone's set up first, just in case it all goes tits up and you need to revert to this

Anyway, do post back here and let me know how it goes and I'll do likewise if I get to do this before you do

Best of luck

Yeah I've no idea what will happen with the apps. I just noticed you get to login again when I changed my google account password for other reasons and it seemed a good way to change the account on the phone without a reset.

I'm curious to know myself actually because I also have another Blade to setup soon!

Would be cool if someone tests the method exchanging nandroid backups between different zte blade phones and tell us if it's working (e.g. using the same google account on two blades, using google apps, using market, using apps in general).

And if something doesn't work then we should try to find out how it's possible to change the market-related google account without a full factory reset.

I'll post the results on Friday night.

The plan!

- root+install same version of clockwork on his handset

- make nandroid backup on his handset and copy that to his pc (just in case)

- copy the contents of my sdcard to his and put that in his handset then restore the nandroid backup (this will have my nandroid backup on at this point too)

- boot and cross my fingers

- see if all the apps work

- try to change my google account to his by changing my password and see how that affects the apps which are already on there

If I'm missing something obvious from this list of things to do, please point it out! :D

Yeah, and would also be nice if you try to use his blade with your google account (right after applying your nandroid backup). Would be interesting to know if this works.

Why not try just copying over the backup file itself rather than go to the effort of copying the whole sd card? (backing it all up along the way of course - don't want you paying the ultimate price for this trailblazing :D )

Well I followed my own steps and it technically worked. It was the perfect copy on his handset and it by default asked me for my google account password. It didn't give me an option to change to an alternative account though.

In the end, android refused to allow me to remove my account from his device because "some programs require this account to function". So, I had to do a reset, and it was pretty much just like installing a plain old rom after that.

So save yourself some effort, bite the bullet and go for a normal rom install for your friends. Just doesn't seem to work.

Pro tip, if you do try this still, change the wallpaper on one of the handsets right away to avoid having to call one of them to figure out which is which.
