Guest BritishBob Posted February 16, 2011 Report Posted February 16, 2011 (edited) Current Status: Built prototype. Prototype works. Trying to decide what to do next. What will this cable do? It allows you to use iPhone headsets on normal phone. Why? Because Apple have designed their own 3.5mm jack. Details20cm long AproxCosts around £7.50 First batch, after prototype, will be no more than 14 units. Other adaptor options:NOKIA AD-57£2.50-£5Length 65 cm.Mic Options: Mic built into the adaptor.Easily found on eBay.Converter Found here: http://www.kvconnection.com/product-p/km-354r3m-r2f.htm [*]$24+ (£14+) [*]Length: Unknown [*]Shielded [*]Uses same parts as I am using. 280+veiws and only 8 posts... At least i have some interest. :D (Bit soon to be posting this^^ but I might as well while i have the time.) The ground and the mic are the wrong way round for the iPhone headsets with mics, compared to normal ones. So now i get poor volume/sound whenever the call button is released. Anyone know of a working adaptor to swap the Mic and Ground from the normal layout to the iPod layout? My Skullcandy FMJ's are dying to be used... They also solve the volume issue. Could a iPod to Normal headphone adaptor work instead? Closest topic i have found and it doesn't realy come close: http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blad...jack-converter/ UK Btw so I am happy to ship from Europe but not USA. Macgyver fix? Sellotape the call button on... Edited February 28, 2011 by BritishBob

Sellotape the call button on... I'm in the same boat as you - bought a lovely pair of Soundmagic MP21's for the mic function and then found out they are wired for iPhone and compatibles which the OSF is not! The only adaptor I have seen is the one at kvconnections in the US but it costs a cool $17.5 before delivery is added. This is more than my headphones cost! A normal iPhone adaptor won't work as it is and when I bought one to try to modify the jack by switching the ground and mic wires over, found that despite the male jack being a 4 pole, the female socket actually only did not output the mic wire so was scuppered there. A guy on here actually had to open up the jack on his actual headphones to switch the wires around but he has told me that the resoldered connections failed after a short so while that is an option, long term reliability could be a problem. So, yeah, could tape down the mic button but I really want mic functionality as well as the play/pause/ff function that you get when playing music. Looked on Ebay for something like kvconnections do but cheaper but failed so far. Not sure what else to do really.

I will let you know how it goes. If it works I might make a few more for people who want them.

As you already pointed out, the difference is that mic and ground are reversed. So you just need to find one that is NOT apple compatible. Nokia and HP are ones that comes to mind, and of course there are dozens others.

They also fix the sound problem by giving the sound a 15%-25% boost dependant on track. And yea you try and play Gold Dust by Flux Pavilion on cheapish headsets. It doesn't work. All sorts of interference from poor bass and frequency limitations. Edited February 17, 2011 by BritishBob

All sorts of interference from poor bass and frequency limitations. I agree with you on that British Bob. Sure that Nokia (which the OSF is headphone socket is compatible) do their own headsets but I don't think the quality is very good. Besides, I think the likes of Nokia tend to go with the route of supplying the mic adaptor lead and then plug your own headphones in. I have one of those but I didn't want the excess length of wire hence I bought my Soundmagics. Thought only Apple use their system for the reversed mic and ground connections and everybody else used the 'standard' system like Nokia. Read some reviews for my Soundmagics where HTC owners said they worked so assumed it should work on the OSF. Only to find out after I bought them that HTC must have switched to the 'Apple' standard! :D Most annoying. Please do let us know how you get on with trying to make your own adaptor up. Cheers.
Guest Ricey155 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 i have the original MS zune headphones and they work really well with SF blade with poweramp and radio iphone 3gs headphones are really weak yes they work but sound is poor and radio hardly get a signal the sf hs thats comes with it are very badly made but work but again quiet compared to zune

Causing the sound problem. On a side note i have the Female Jack now. Really quite happy with it. Just the male jack and some heat shrink left to get.

Guest wbaw Posted February 19, 2011 Report Posted February 19, 2011 i'm sure someone found a nokia headset that had an adaptor for normal 3.5mm headphones with a mic in the adaptor, search the forum.

You are talking about the NOKIA AD-57 and If I am not mistaken the jack that you plug you headset into is only 3 pole. Making your headset pointless. While it is an adaptor, you have to use the built in buttons/mic and that isn't as good as using your own for some people. Like me. :D As a side note it is 65cm long, meaning in total I would have nearly 2m of cable and the mic about 1.4m from my face. Note that the Headphones are only 3 pole. Meaning plunging a headset into them will probably be pointless. Anyone confirm? Edited February 19, 2011 by BritishBob

At one point I was using the Nokia mic adaptor, plugged in an adaptor supplied with my Soundmagics which splits the earphone jack into a mic jack and a headphone jack then my earphones into this adaptor - but the mass of cables was too much to bear and I still couldn't use the mic button on my Soundmagics! British Bob If you can a success of your home made adaptor, I think I'll be interested but is there anyway to reduce the length of it from the 20cm to it's bare minimum?

But I should be able to get it down to the length of the jack. So about 3 inches. But i have to make it work first.
Guest BritishBob Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 Just waiting on the male jack. should be here today/tomorrow.

Yeah, it wont convert your iphone headset into a working blade headset, you'd need to use the mic & button on the adaptor itself. It could be useful for turning a standard pair of headphones into a headset. If you look at the adaptor, you'll see it has a clip, you could use that on your collar & tuck the excess cable down your top, not ideal, but it wont be 1.4m from your face & you can use any set of earphones with it. Anyway, good luck with your project. Fingers crossed it works with no trouble. Edited February 24, 2011 by wbaw
Guest ronc2000 Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 Just waiting on the male jack. should be here today/tomorrow. I am sure there are plenty of these on ebay. You really do not have to do it yourself. Look for Nokia type (as opposed to iphone) headset adapter with mic. There are many short ones, like 10cm.
Guest wbaw Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I seem to have found a few proper adaptors on the internet too, just none on uk sites yet, but I've not really been looking. There are some from hong kong based sellers on ebay, like this http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=170482444368 but they also look quite easy to make.
Guest BritishBob Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) I have the male connector. Fairly disappointed it has some of the most annoying connections I think I have ever seen. :S Oh well, looks like i will have to battle on. It has also be said that those adaptors don't work.^^ Update Prototype seems to works. I just need to solder it up. Not sure on microphone compatibility, but it sorts out the sound issues. Unfortunately I don't think this lead will work as it doesn't swap the mic and ground connections over between the male and female jacks. I bought one to see if I could rewire the ground and mic wires on the male jack. male jack was 4 pole but when I stripped the plastic off, the mic wire was missing. Then stripped the female jack to find it only had 3 connections. Was rather miffed!
Guest BritishBob Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Built it. It works perfectly, but my planning wasn't very good, so it is temperamental. It just shorts the ground and mic pausing the song. Only other problem is i cannot have my case on while using the adaptor as it doesn't fit.
