Stop HTC Desire from deleting eMails

On my old LG, I had to change the "Download amount" from "3 days" to "All."

The LG would then go off, download about 20-30 of the last received eMails to that account, then resume just downloading new ones as they arrived. The initial download splurge was slightly frustrating, but it was a 1-off, and easily dealt with.

And that stopped it auto-deleting my older eMails.

Well, I tried this method with my 2.2 Desire, and it proceeded to begin downloading all 1526 eMails I'd ever gotten to that account. Why did the LG have the good sense to only grab the last 20 or so, but the HTC doesn't?

So, anyway, I switched it back down to "3 days" but now it'll be deleting anything older than that.

Am I missing some simple setting somewhere?
