Stock ROM or Custom ROM?

Hi,

I am looking for some advise which will help me and i am sure others as well..

Basically, i am looking to understand the concept behind custom ROM.. apart from eyecandy and the ability to go to a newer version of android (i.e. CM7, MIUI) - is it erally worth the move?

The reason for me asking this, is would i be best off running stock acer ROM with custom boot.img which contains fixes for MT, tethering, volume hack etc? (Does this exist - is it up to date - or has dev's stopped work?)

Please dont flame me.. but i am just curious.. as i understand that there is added benefits such as Fast dormancy (which will enable a much better battery life?) - this is really something that is letting me down on this device, not even 5-10 hours battery life before it's completely dead...

I'll be honest, i came from an iphone 4 which i needed to charge once every 30-48 hours (and it still wasn't flat) and coming to this device where i need to charge it every 4-10 hours otherwise game over.. it's quite disappointing... but yet at the same time, i love android due to the customisation and features in comparison to iOS

For me the biggest benefits are the longer battery life and the speed.

I'm using CM7 and after 2 days and a couple of hours my battery is on 44%.

The speed is amazing.

I have my liquid for over a year now and it has never been that fast before.

And in that year i've only been a month or so on stock roms:)

So i'd suggest going for a custom rom. Only downside is the sometimes not fully working hardware like camcorder, bluetooth on cm7.

But as i said i'll gladly accept that.

Hello

I have an A1 : with stock froyo (4.002.14) I usually get 1.5-2 days with 3g, sync on, several phone calls, 1 hour of browsing and 1 hour ebook reading. If the phone is in standby I have somethin like 1-2% battery drain / hour.

Custom ROM's used by me:

LCR F 2.0: it has several advantages (A2SD, battery in %, sw optimisations, elimination of some acer apps which are not generally used, etc). I see it as an enhancement of the stock rom. Battery drain was similar with stock for me. All HW works

TL Gingerbread: very light (stock apps are mostly out) and Gingerbread feel. Battery drain very good. All HW works

MIUI: if you like the MIUI stile it is perfect for you. up until last week there were some HW issues (light / prox sensore, bluetooth, etc) now maybe there are sorted out. Battery life was also slightly worse than stock

At the moment I am using the OC kernel from rithchen mostly for possibility for OC, Compcache and SWAP. All HW seems to work and battery life is still slightly worse than stock but reasonable (3%-4% / hour in standby)

So why to choose custom ROM: HW enhancements (OC, A2SD, Compcache, SWAP) if you feel that you need them, customising options, looks (MIUI).

If you are fresh on android and liquid it could be better that you spend some days at least on stock rom to get to know the platform and device.

Learn to work with Malez recovery. Remember that you can make a nandroid backup before flashing a custom rom and if you don't like it you just restore it.

I also came from iOS[jailbroken 3g] and i still went through the full battery in a day, but im absolutely fine trading battery life just for the simple fact that i dont have to resort to using itunes to sync my music. Using CM7 absolutely kills anything that my iphone could do short of the different options of dock connectability to accessories. Something that i would like to see android do more of in the future.

Wow 2 days on CM7! For some reason i lost 75% of battery in 10 hours most of which the phone was idle on CM7 and still try to figure out why.. Do u use interactive gorvernor? OC'ed? on 3G networks?
