Guest endhalf Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Hi everyone, hope you'll forgive me that I won't be contributing to comunity of Advent Vega, but I want to ask about this tablet and who gives me better answer, than owner? Recently, I started to consider buying tablet as my Amazon Kindle doesn't really handle comix really well. Originally, I wanted to buy some chinese "crap" tablet with Via procesor that I know really sucks. Then, I thought that I may be using tablet for browsing and while browsing, I maybe like listening to some MP3s, or watching video maybe. So I did the research on the internet and I stumbled on 2 tablets...Ipad obviously and Advent Vega (POINT OF VIEW Mobii Tegra Tablet 10.1"). Now, I really like iOS as I have iPod Touch already and I know what iPad can handle. What I really dislike is need to convert all my videos, because iOS can play only MP4s, not having option to just plug iPad into my computer and drag'n'drop files in it (you must have iTunes, wich I hate with botom of my heart) and price of course. On the other hand, Advent seems really nice in everything that I dislike about an iPad, yet I read some reviews, wich said, that Vega isn't really sturdy, it has crapy screen and has a lot of flaws in Android OS. I'm worried about it as I don't want to buy tablet with Android 2.2 and be stuck with it, when 3.0 comes out. So, my question is, is it worth it? Vega (POW) cost here 456 USD (=350E) and iPad (16GB, only WiFi version) 666 USD (=500E). Would you buy rather Vega for 456 USD, or iPad for 666USD? I'm from Czech Republic, so yes, we have these kind of devices kind of expensive here, but we have 2 years warranty on everything...
Guest lydius Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Go for the tegra tablet. Ipad is EVIL - 666 usd!

Guest jellywobbles Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 Hi everyone, hope you'll forgive me that I won't be contributing to comunity of Advent Vega, but I want to ask about this tablet .................. Funy way to start post! Not willing to contribute to this excellent community, yet you want to "milk it" for free advice! I think you need to shake the dice and throw again mate! :D
Guest endhalf Posted February 17, 2011 Report Posted February 17, 2011 (edited) jellywobbles: I am willing but I don't have the device yet so how can I contribute? Did you even read the post? I asked in all seriousness and the most polite as I can (because I'm not english native speaker it is harder for me than just come and write "yo whazz up I wanna advice") yet I received two supposedly funny answers and one "you need to be better" answer... Wow, thank you all three of you. If I'm be able to, I will gladly help users with their problems but now I'm just considering buying this device and I wanted some feedback from actual owners and users. That's all... Really hard, I know :D Oh, by the way, by "I won't be contributing to comunity" I meant that this post won't be contributing... It isn't really contribute to anyone if I ask about Vega, is it? Endhalf ... if you bother to read through the posts there have been on this forum already you will find your question comes up time and again and we have all input our thoughts about the device before. I'm sorry if my response seemed flippant but if you really want a device you can use straight out of the box but cannot modify much apart from adding apps then go for the iPad if you want something that can be modified to achieve what you want but can be as frustrating as hell sometimes then go for the Vega. No offense intended :D
Guest dagrim1 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Well, why limit the choices between these two... Here my opinions between the two: Vega: + Very customizable (widgets, apps, looks) + Relatively cheap + One of the fastest tablets + Android (owning a galaxy-s the advent vega/pov mobii made even more sense) + Flash support - NEEDS customization (out of the box you have no market, feels more sluggish, etc) - Screen (viewing angles are so so, and sometimes I feel the resolution could be better) - Still not completely sure about size/form... This really depends on use though. If you're much more into video and such I think the size is fine, for internet browsing etc I'd prefer a 4:3 formfactor I think. It also works best if you can keep it on your lap or something, also wrt typing. iPad: + Works straight out of the box + Better screen - Price - Closed - iTunes - iPad2 coming soon... (But I guess there are always coming new tablets as well) But wouldn't the Notion Ink Adam be a better option? It has a screen, if you choose for that version, which should be way more suitable for e-reading. Believe it has confirmed HoneyComb support. Etc... Between the two above though, if you're willing to spend some time on tweaking and can live with the lesser screen and perhaps lesser experience I'd say vega. Otherwise go for the iPad.
Guest lydius Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 I'm sorry you didn't like my answer so let me elaborate a little. I said ipad was evil mostly because of apple's philosophy of makeing you pay for everything. Ipad is way more expensive than vega but inferior in terms of hardware specs, though it works right out of the box. It's made for lazy people, in my opinion, who don't want to learn, to discover, to tweak a little. It's quite like comparing a linux pc with a macbook pro. If you're a mac guy, don't have second thoughts, go buy an ipad. Make steve jobs richer. But if installing a rom, driver, hacking a little, looking for a free or at least cheaper way to do things tickle your brain and why not make you feel you're alive... try a vega. Or pov. Or whatever tegra 2 device you want.

Or whatever tegra 2 device you want. That isn't quite fair imo... I mean, I like tweaking and spending time with and on my device but I don't think it should be something you HAVE to do. And not everyone has the time, will or even possibility to learn what is needed. Hell, there are enough who already get in trouble on their computers when they have to copy paste or something. I do agree the iPad is way overpriced and that apple has the tendency to control way too much and squeeze out money way to much. But they do deliver a great out of the box experience which the vega/pov simply doesn't... If ppl are willing to spend more money for that, it's up to them. I can't wait for honeycomb though, the experience as of now is good and fine but it surely could be better.
Guest Clark80 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 I went backwards and forwards on which tablet to buy... In the end I got the Vega because of price. Apart from the screen (dodgy angles at times) it does almost everything else you could want from a 10 inch tablet. Support on this site is very detailed if you use search = modding is easy for the Vega I may at some stage shell out for the Notion (beautiful screen) - iPad is currently not doing it for me (I do have 2 iPhones [one is for work] & a MacBook Pro)
Guest dagrim1 Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Yeah, keeping an eye out on the honeycomb and higher res tablets myself... Higher res+honeycomb+better screen would be ideal for me.
Guest obb Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 For me .. Ipad has better screen, but thats the only thing it does right IMO ... and you pay a cost for it. IDevices are for people who just want something to work ... Android devices are for people who want to 'tweak' .. besides its not that difficult to get the Vega into a working state from out of the box. Thanks to Paul mainly ... As I said anything Apple and your paying for thr brand and a better build quality and a dead easy (limited) OS. Android is for everyone else .. simply as that really. YOu pays your money you takes your choice
Guest IndyUK Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 It's true that the iPad is more expensive and "locked" down. However, once jailbroken you can do a whole lot more with it. I own both devices and I have to say that the iPad still wins. The price argument isn't really a valid point to argue over as you get what you pay for. Remember, you've only got to look at the Samsung Tab and see how close it's priced when you start adding decent hardware to an Android device. However, in defence of the Vega, the comparison will only be fair if we can get Android 3.0 on it as that's designed for tablets. At the moment we have a scenario where the Android OS on the Vega doesn't look that good because as apps are being stretched to fit the 10" screen, a bit like the initial iPad apps that were x2 zoom of the iPhone ports - terrible some of them were. My gripe with the Apple device is why the hell do I have to get a Mac OSx machine to develop applications for the iDevices. Apple don't have the SDK enviroment for Windows/Linux users. This is where Android beats the iOS hands down. Just package your app into a apk file and distribute it. Not like Apple and stick it on their store.
Guest endhalf Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 Thank you everyone for your feedback. That's exactly what I wanted. I decided to get Vega and try to tweak it. Also, I want to write my own programs and because I don't have any MacOS system at home, I won't be able to do that for iPad. I don't know why em I so attracted to iPad. I know it is overpriced and hell, tegra 2 looks so ahead in terms of HW, yet still I'm attracted to that flawless non-sluggish iOS, that I'v never seen to be slow at internet browsing or anything like that. On the other hand, many Android tablets are so sluggish... I hope that Vega with a little tweaking won't be that case.
Guest clear sky Posted February 18, 2011 Report Posted February 18, 2011 (edited) One thing I realized about tablets the past 24 hours is that the quality of the screen is a very essential factor that determines the usuability and quality. I couldn't live with the low quality screen of the Vega not even for 24 hours and I read in reviews that other cheapish tablets like the Archos 101 are suffering from poor quality screens as well. One thing is for sure, if you plan to read a lot of ebooks on your tablet then you need to spend some more money. Ipad's screen is a lot better and quite a few quality tablets are scheduled to come out this year as well. Hardware wise it's pretty snappy and if you can live with the very bad screen you can do many things with it. Edited February 18, 2011 by clear sky

Personally i do a lot of reading on the vega ( mostly with kindle) and have never really had a problem with the screen quality, the only time the vieweing angle has been a problem is when showing pictures and video to other people.

I believe that you are telling the truth. Yet for me this LCD is unbearable and it is without a doubt of lesser quality. If anyone asks my humble opinion whether the Vega is worth it's money I'd say yes, but if they ask whether it is a value for money product I'd say definitely not. You get exactly what you pay for. But I don't despair and I'm not miserable, :D tablet market is still very immature, new products will come and prices will drop sharply :D
Guest pozmu Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 clearsky, I have exactly same opinion as you, had to return vega due to poor viewing angles, screen is essential, I did know viewing angles aren't very good, but didn't realize they can be as bad... Now I'm looking for a new tablet, but I'm unable to find anything with decent 10' screen...

Hmmm... I own both iPad (wi-fi model and 3G model) and a Vega and some of this is utter rubbish. Being a software developer I have used Windows for many many years and now use Macs including the iPad. One thing I do not miss on my iPad is Flash. The instability of it is something which I cannot live with, and have even resorted to Flash blockers on both my PCs and Macs for the same reason. The advances in OPEN standards like HTML5 and CSS3 are rendering CLOSED systems like Flash redundant. I still find it surprising that as a community of open standard and open source people, Android users (myself excluded) still harp on about the lack of Flash on iOS based devices. Multitasking is possible on the ipad as it is on the iphone. HDMI out / built-in USB is an issue and something I hope Apple resolve on Tues when they announce the iPad2 but I won't hold my breath! I love my iPads and I love my Vega but for different reasons. Cost was a big factor with the Vega and for the money it is great, but nothing (yet) in my opinion beats the iOS experience, as someone else said you get what you pay for. I look forward to playing with the Xoom as this seems the first real iPad contender in my view.
Guest lydius Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 ok. i'm not a sw developper. i'm a systems engineer, taking care of a 150 workstations + printers etc. network. and i know Flash is everywhere, on 90% of web pages. try to remove flash player from any pc and you'll get a phone in 5 minutes that "internet is not working!" so please don't tell me Apple is making the internet more open by not adding flash support! also multitasking on a single core processor makes me remember the multitasking days of windows 3. possible indeed. but worth paying double the money? ios experience is that something actually works as it should. for good money. but if i can get my gear work as it should with some tweaks and tricks, for much less money, i feel really satisfied. what else is rubbish in what i wrote above? and don't tell me everything will be ok when King Apple brings us, the subjects, ipad 2. there will always be a something '2' better, faster, but obviously a lot more expensive.
Guest stormuk Posted February 25, 2011 Report Posted February 25, 2011 Have to agree about flash not being a selling point for me, when i contemplated selling my ipad for the vega. Have an ipad and on the odd occasion ive wanted flash i simply use the puffin browser. The only thing that was a pain was bbc iplayer, but bbc did a beta site and now the new app is better than using the web. I think along the lines that most android machines are locked until they are rooted, and or different firmware is installed, the vega is a good example of this, why is that any different to a ipad being jailbroken? One of my most used apps these days on my ipad is xbmc, aswell as being a breeze to now watch films from my nas, I can read from sd cards, admittedly you need a 10 quid adaptor but its a small price for the extra functionality. The other two things for me that make the ipad better is the apple store, simpler to browse and not full of rubbish, and the other thing is the games at the moment are better imo
