Guest 1ntense Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 I hear this is a good keyboard and as I cant stand the touchpal and normal android keyboards the phone comes with, I thought I would give it a try. I just seem to get error messages trying to download the files posted on this site though, does my phone need to be rooted to download these, if so is there any danger of mucking my phone up trying to root it?
Guest richardkemp Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 No need to root, you must be doing something wrong to be honest. Depending on the ROM you are using, HTC IME may be a poor choice as on a lot of ROMs (not sure about yours) it will forget any words you add to the dictionary after each reboot. I recommend trying the smart keyboard trial in the market, it's the best I've used.
Guest 1ntense Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 Im using the 2.1 eclair the phone came with, touchpal also seems to forget the words Ive typed and typing them again each time is a pain. Ill try the one you mentioned but I would like to try the HTC one as it seems lots of people seem to like it. Not sure what Im doing wrong, Ive tried unziping it on my pc and phone but still get the same error message?
Guest Poodha Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 (edited) The HTC_IME losing it's dictionary constantly and having to import it frequently(you can export your dictionary to the SD, so you wont completely lose it) is a royal PITA. Despite that, it's still my go to keyboard, it's so much better than anything else I've tried(the improved standard gingerbread qwerty, touchpal, swype and a couple of other ones I don't remember). It'd be a perfect flawless 10/10 that wouldn't need any other improvement if they sorted out the dictionary thing. Not sure what you are doing wrong. But maybe they changed the file. Cause I can't install it either after I swapped ROM(to CM7) despite other people saying it should work fine on that rom. Edited February 21, 2011 by Poodha
Guest HMZX Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 try the gingerbread keyboard, thats impressive!
Guest vermat17 Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 I personally use Swype, free to dowload as well... http://beta.swype.com/
Guest cacoe Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 I've tried swype for a day so far. Sometimes it just seems to flow but I find myself having to think about what I'm doing a lot more. Must be because I'm so used to typing on a qwerty keyboard. You'd think it'd be quicker instantly, but there is some getting used to it involved.
Guest jurrasstoil Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 try the gingerbread keyboard, thats impressive! meh, depends. i type really fast and dirty and the word predicition of the HTC_ime mod is just miles ahead of the gingerbread keyboard imo. @OP just download it with you pc and move it to your phone via USB.
Guest wbaw Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 swiftkey is also good & available on the market.
Guest travellerscross Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 I like Swype as for me it's much easier to use. Granted it sometimes slips up and inserts another word than the actual one you tried to swype. I don't know about the HTC dictionary or Android as I can't find it in the system. What I do know is that if you have the time for an hours worth of faffing about. Create a text document and write every slang or swear word you use in everyday life... Don't insert the words as swearword, swearword, slangword Do it as swearword swearword swearword slangword etc etc etc Once you have done it, then put the text document on your sd card and then go into astro or something like that and open up the file with file editor. Make sure the keyboard you are using at the time is swype. Select all of the document, then copy and then press that S key at the bottom left of the swype keyboard that also doubles up as giving you tips or information. You may need to select all and copy a few times and press that s. Eventually it will insert all those words into the dictionary itself. Saves for a lot of faffing when you first use swype as it has no slang nor any swear words in it. It's amazing when you realise just how many swear words, names of places or shortened/slang words you do use in everyday life. It makes me wonder if you could do this with Android Dictionary etc etc
Guest 1ntense Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 All I know is that Im very happy with the phone in all other accounts bar the keyboard. Ive never had any problems with texting on any other phone that Ive owned but this one is a pain, I cant stand texting on it. Any chance someone could give me a link or clear instructions on how to download the HTC keyboard or one that Ill be happier with than touchpal or the standard android one?
