Should I bother to root/new ROM my stock phone?

Hi All,

So I have a completely stock San Fran with all the Orange stuff still on there. On my old phone (the i900) I did install custom ROMs as the stock ones were useless.

I realise this forum is dedicated to all things ROMs and Rooting - so the obvious answer would be "yes" but I'd like to know why.

The way the phone is now I can see little reason in rooting/a custom ROM. My phone is stable and I think does everything I'd want it to be able to do, and reasonably quickly.

Is there a significant increase in speed, or functionality by rooting/custom ROM?

Also as I've now got to quite a distant level in Angry Birds, I'd rather not lose all my data. Is there a way to back-up my phone and reload everything - before a ROM update or Root?

And apologies for the basic questions

Cheers,

R

1) YES! a custom rom is miles faster and you get rid of the orange junk

2) YES! :D use titanium backup to backup all your apps/data

after flashing the new rom, use titanium backup to restore them again. (its an app on the market)

HOWEVER!

you need root access. for this, use universal androot

search it on google

tell us how you get on!

Just to elaborate a little, the custom ROMs are faster because of 2 things. Froyo (or even Gingerbread now) and overclocking. OCing has had mixed reports about the increase in speed but almost everyone considers froyo to be a lot faster than eclair.

Other reasons include putting apps on SD (either with native froyo or apps2ext) or even repartitioning so you have more room on the internal memory for apps.

i agree with the above

had the orange rom, orange apps etc

i installed a new rom (had a few problems, 2, but thanks to the help from the forum guys) and now i have the japanese jellyfish (think its the 7)

very easy to use, much easier than the orange rom

you should see it, to believe it!

I've had my SF pretty much from the release. I rooted it but only now have I put on a custom ROM and boy I wish I'd done it sooner.

A pretty steep learning curve though - can't seem to get any 3G or 3G internet working at the moment though.

Since I flashed mine with Froyo 2.2 I've never looked back.

Same thing here. I waited a couple of months before rooting it since I thought it was working fine and was too lazy to read up on about how to do it. But when I actually did root it, it was super easy. And the phone is SO much more fun to use now. Faster, more functions and all the different ways you can customize it. AND the latest releases are super stable as well(using JJ rl9). My Orange ROM didn't work better(hell, the wifi worked worse on that).

To the op, the biggest reason to go froyo(or even gingerbread when it's stable).

* AP2SD, save so much space on your precious internal memory.

* Wifihotspot/USBtethering, use it all the time with my laptop on the go

* Everything just goes faster

But in your case you only really need one reason, and that is that Angry birds runs soooo much smoother. On CM7 there isn't the slightest bit of lag(on stock the heavier levels could be very slow at times). Although the CM7 is still prelease and not that stable yet, so you might start with Froyo(still runs so much better on Angry birds than what the stock did).

I'm now on my second ROM! I first tried FLB-Froyo G2 for ZTE Blade (r9b) but later on went to Japanese Jellyfish RLS9 and much happier, especially with APPS2SD!

Thanks guys - i just need to find a very stable ROM and I'll get to work.

Jellyfish seems to be popular from comments here.
