ZTE Blade Call Quality / Background Noise

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Recently I purchased an Orange San Francisco which I am mightily impressed with

However one thing which I am actually quite disappointed with is the sound quality when making calls. I can hear background noise like static or a hissing sound. This sound is constant during the call and is a little irritating. Compared to my Samsung G600 which is almost dead silent, this phone produces quite a lot of static noise.

Is this a normal thing with ZTE Blades / Orange San Francisco or is it something that can be remedied with a software patch?

Does it occur with your ZTE Blade? Perhaps I am spoilt by my G600.

Should I return it and ask for a replacement or will the replacement also have this same issue?

Thanks for any replies.

Mine sounds fine.

You tried calling using a different SIM incase it's the carrier?

On mine there is a little bit of hiss from the earpiece, but not much. Volume is a bit too low through the earpiece in general.

The real problem is when using headphones: any media sound has a fairly loud hiss behind it, then about 3 seconds after the sound effect finishes, the hiss ends with a loud click. I imagine it's a really cheap nasty sound chip inside the device.

It's one of those things that's shoddy enough to be annoying, but not "broken" enough to go through the hassle of getting a replacement.

Yeah.

I phoned a mate who has the phone and I checked my sister's san fran and they both seem to have an audible hiss, so it is not just my phone.

It is not too irritating... I think I was in a very bad mood that day therefore I made it to be a very big deal when it isn't. On this occasion I will allow it and keep the phone

Since it is a problem with all orange san francisco's then there is no reason to go for a replacement because that will also have the same issue with the sound.

Thanks for all your replies.

I got the hissing noise also, and I got mine replaced from Orange after alot of hassle (talking to orange customer services is like talking to a brick wall). Anyway went through all the hassle and got a new one, and its exactly the same. I'll have to get used to it.

strange no problem with mine

I have tried other phones and I cannot hear ANY hiss whatsoever. This includes the iphone 3gs, samsung g600 and htc desire hd. Would you say that your device has the same level of hiss as these phones when listening to the earpiece during a call? Can you hear an audible level of hiss?

Thanks

speaker phone creates so much feedback for the caller its unusable.

Phoned orange.. got the feeling it was very much a known problem

There seems to be two issues at work here. Firstly there IS a slight hiss sound present during a call. Secondly hardly anyone notices it. Thus those who do notice it (e.g. picky ones such as myself) waste a lot of time worrying about it when it really is a non-issue.

Seems strange...

Have you put a custom rom on it at all?

A side effect of some roms is that they can cause static when headphones are used, so maybe it is an extension of that problem?

No just bought it recently, not customised at all.

Maybe it is just an OSF problem. Knowing the price of the phone, I wouldn't really complain, have to take some shortcuts I suppose.

I got two SF phones and found that the call quality is just average (and sometimes low) in both.

If you need a phone to make phone calls during lots of hours everyday, it is not the best phone.

If you want the best value/money SMARTphone: ZTE blade it is the best at the moment.

Compared to the Pulse, the Blade has excellent sound quality so count ourselves lucky! I do notice the hiss too, its loud compared to better quality phones.

I am also facing low call volume on OSF w/o custom ROM, also using other SIM.

Can custom ROM will inscrease the call volume?

Sound quality is at best average with the Blade. I've heard worse phones though. With the Blade, expect low-volume high-pitched hissing/noise during calls. After call end, this will persist for some seconds, then turn off with a slight click. This seems to be a hardware issue and independent of firmwares (I see this with two different Blades, one on stock 2.1, one on JJ 2.2). I'm quite sensitive to unnecessary noise but find it tolerable.

Solution: Get a bluetooth headset. Since this bypasses the analog output circuit of the Blade, quality is perfect then.

I upgraded from gen1 to gen2 and I hear this noise for 3 or 4 secs after each sound stops. There is a post here telling how to downgrade: http://android.modaco.com/topic/338653-guide-how-to-restore-gen1-safely-after-windows-upgrade-to-gen2/

Why is it dangerous?
