Guest sonny crockett Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Hi Guys I am a visitor from the Blade forum just asking a question for a friend who has reserved a Vega from Currys but is not technical. I fear I may have to stop him as it looks like you can only get Android Market with a custom rom. I am used to doing this and have been on various Android phones but do I fancy doing it on his new £250 toy? No! My theory when he asked me about this was just to get the APK on there and allow it to install all APKs in the settings manager and install it via a file manager. But can I now do it this way without having a custom rom? And I guess does it have a file manager? Sorry for what is probably an obvious question but all my searches via Google pointed at custom roms and if this is the case I may have to stop his purchase! Cheers for you help guys... Simon

Simon Mate, unfortunately you can't but fear not, the vega is UNBRICKABLE, your in no danger of damaging his toy trust me, I have tried countless times to break mine without success.
Guest simonta Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) Wobblydoggy is spot on. Got to say that I can't imagine the Vega without the addons but do note that the mcr is NOT a ROM. It adds and replaces system files. You start with the stock ROM then run a batch file to do the business. The only skill you need is to know how to load drivers for USB devices. I chose the Vega because of this forum and the add ons. Can't imagine a Vega without it - it reaches about 20% of potential with just the stock ROM but with it, it's a bargain at the price. The only thing close is the Archos which also doesn't come with the market but also has, a so far unbeatable, secure boot loader which prevents customisation. Just see the amount of activity on this forum vs the Archos one. That tells me I made the right choice. At this price, for the performance, there is no equal. In short, if you really don't want to customise, you will be disappointed with any tablet as this price/peformance point but customise and it's great. USB, HDMI, twin Tegra, h/ware acceleration, 512mb. Still unbeaten unless you want to pay Samsung/Apple/Motorola prices. The only thing in between, AFAIK, is the Notion Ink Adam but after all the hype, that seems to be underwhelming the industry. I can also attest that it's unbrickable. I've got mine into some awful states and the worst I've ever had to do is reflash the stock ROM and this forum is ace at getting complete noobs back up and running. Guest shadow wave Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Good advice here so far, the mod is easy to install but if your really just want the market it can be found in this thread just look under software updates and you should find the market apk. There is a file manager installed already so you can just load it onto the SD card and select it with the ifilemanager to install.

Shadow Wave - That was my original question and the other answers seem to point out that I cannot just install the APK? simonta and wobblydoggy care to comment? I dont want to start a barny but need to know if this can be done? Thanks for all the advice so far guys
Guest simonta Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Sorry, I didn't answer the real question  Shadow Wave is right. APK can be side loaded.
Guest rferrett Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Installing the ROM for the Vega is literally just updating to Pauls custom ADB driver then running an batch file. No pissing around with unrevoked, you don't need to use or install CWM if oyu don't want to. Honestly it is piss easy to do. Can just about understand a civilian not wanting to do it but if he has an Android savy mate in you to help there is really no good reason not to install the MCR custom ROM. Seriously it is eaasssyyy. Oh and as others have pointed out in order to "brick" the Vega you literally have to mix it with shale and bake it at 700 degrees in a kiln! The damn thing is unbrickable!
Guest warriorscot Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 That should work, although it would be easier just to install the custom rom. As others have said the custom rom isn't really a custom rom its just a batch script that installs the extra apps to make the vega usable basically what you want to do manually. The two parts that have breaking potential are the USB host mod and custom kernel however its a pretty low risk and clockwork mod has risks but the latest version is stable. As others have said the vega physically can not be bricked or disabled from any type of modding as it has a recovery mode that you activate before booting android with the key combination shown in the advent update instructions. Basically it works like hitting delete or tab on a PC to enter Bios or boot menu before your operating system loads. From there its just a case of reinstalling the base firmware. The hard part is getting windows to load the correct drivers rather than the automatic windows update ones but that's nothing to do with the vega and more to do with ADB not working with the basic drivers. But in the most basic sense if you screw up you just start again from scratch.
Guest sonny crockett Posted February 22, 2011 Report Posted February 22, 2011 Guys As per usual you are all absolute legends! I am going to talk him through side loading it and see how that goes. I look forward to meeting you all again when I save enough pennies for my own Vega but for now its back to the Blade forum for me! PS - Thanks for not flaming me for asking a question that i more than likely could have answered with a bit more searching! Cheers Simon
Guest debs626 Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 (edited) Just adding to this thread ..... There is an alternative way to install the market other than a custom rom and the method shadow wave has mentioned. I Updated my Vega to 1.09 and applied this method found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930267 Just use the software tool update(in the Vega settings)and select the Market_update0.zip file which you've transfered to the software file on the SD card. The Vega will reboot and the Marked will be installed. The market installed will be the old one at first but it will update itself  HTH Edited February 23, 2011 by debs626

It does work but not all applications show. It does show paid ones but never worked out how to install the twitter app, maps won't appear. Basically it works but needs some more work done to it. I am using it now. Edited February 23, 2011 by carl rose
Guest sonny crockett Posted February 23, 2011 Report Posted February 23, 2011 Okay guys I talked him through installing the Market APK on his Vega and it seemed to install okay but when he presses the icon nothing happens. This was the file used Vending_2_2_11.apk. Its difficult for me to get an understanding as to what is not right as I am not local to him so cannot get hold of the unit. I assume it was not as simple as I thought as I wanted to avoid getting into custom roms as that would have to wait for me to do it as he would not be confident enough. Any ideas on why the Market wont load? My only thought is there is no association with a Google account. Or it was the wrong vending file. Thanks as always for the help! Simon
