Guest Desire Newbie Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 Hi guys. After months of trying to work out how I could update my google apps after installing Pauls great r9 rom, I have finally seen a fix on google which is quite simple really. All you have to do is extract the rom (r9) zip file and move the culprits from system app to data app. You then install r9 again, (obviously after backing up) and you can then uninstall the apps from the phone and install them from fresh from the market :-) My question to the experts is if I were to move all my apps from the system folder to data, enabling me to uninstall any app on the phone that i wasn't happy with or couldnt update, would it cause a problem? I'd appreciate your help. Many thanks

Your system partition has its own memory (250mb) and your data has its own memory. It would be possible if you moved the apps to data but that would only use your internal storage and leave your system partition/storage unused which is a waste of memory. I usually only move the apps I'll probably update at some point (Gmail, Maps, Marketplace, Talk) to data and leave as much as I can on system to fill it up and avoid wasting space.

Many thanks for the reply. Yeah that makes sense. I didn't know how the internal storage worked on the Desire but thought it must have been partitioned. What rom are you using? Is Pauls rom the best for sense UI in your oipinion? I've tried others but always seem to go back to Pauls r9.
Guest bpivk Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 (edited) Pauls rom (I've only used r8 and r9) is great. It's smooth and stable and it's (in my opinion) the closest thing you can get to stock rom with a few great addons. But I love some functions that Sense HD (the Sense that is used on Desire HD) provides. Like location tracking to recover your phone if you lose it and some other visual changes like skins so I prefer the HD version. I don't like many roms because cooks often make too many changes for my taste. I prefer some of my changes so I make my own roms based on robociks roms (RCS MixHD) with some modifications (Sub501's kernel, custom notification icons) and addons. I also strip out a lot of junk that comes with the rom like Car panel or whatever it's called and some other apps I don't use (Maps, Street, App sharing,...). You can check starburst rom (lite version). It's supposed to be close to stock but I've never tried it so I can't comment about performance. Edited February 24, 2011 by bpivk

Yeah I love the r9 rom but I think i'll give that starburst rom (lite) a go as it sounds pretty cool. Will let you know how I find it. Many thanks :-)
