User Picture in Messaging

First of all, thank you all for this amazing forum, which has helped my root/flash my SF in less than an hour after receiving it. Would have been completely lost without it!

Just wondering - I got it to sync with my FB contacts, which is great. However, it doesn't seem to sync 'me' - when I send texts from 'Messaging', everyone else has a little picture, but I'm just a grey box. Any way to force sync FB in a way that it recognizes I'm me, and for it to get my picture on the phone?

Thanks!

I believe this is due to 'My Number' not being set in Settings > About.

Is there any way of setting it?

Are you using a GiffGaff SIM? It took a lot of farting about to get it to work for me and I can't be sure exactly how it was eventually cured. Anyhow, the main things I can suggest are to put your SIM into a phone capable of recording 'my number' on the SIM card. A number of older handsets (especially Sony Ericsson ones) have this facility, as well as all i-Phones. You need to get your number on the SIM card so that when you press the menu button on your San Francisco and select settings --> about phone --> status you can see your phone number under 'My phone number'. I believe you then need to log into your Gmail on the Internet (from a PC) and create a contact sporting your own phone number and your own Google Mail/Gmail email address. If you have previously entered any contacts in your phone or Google Mail account with your own phone number then it seems it is important to delete those first before trying the above. Once you have created this new contact with your name, number and Google mail email address, add the image you want to that contact and save it. When you then sync your phone with your Google Mail account your image should then, hopefully, appear as an avatar on your messages.

Good luck. I found it hugely frustrating but got there in the end. I will try to dig out some links for you at lunch time.

Hi,

First post here

The easy way i found to do this was to add myself as a contact with name "Me" and my number then added a picture to the contact. Now the messages i write have the contact pic i added.

I "Think" there's an app for doing this but not sure the name of it

I put my sim in an older phone and done it

Found the app http://www.appbrain.com/app/my-phone-numbe...g.myphonenumber

Aye; that would be much easier if you can get it to install. I had forgotten about that option. Try that first. I just could not get it to install on my phone - every time I tried my phone would report installation unsuccessful and the rather unhelpful 'unknown error'. I tried all sorts to get that app installed but no dice.

That didn't work when I tried it. Again, this could have been down to not having 'my number' on the SIM but, to be fair, it still didn't work even when I did get my number sorted. It only worked after I deleted my 'Me' entry from my phone and put a contact with my number on Google Mail. The process seems to be different depending on your SIM/network provider.

Oh, this worked. My number is now added! Do I just have to do the Google Contacts thing now?

Yes, it's worth a try. You can try creating a contact in your phone with you own number first if you wish, but delete it [if it doesn't work] before you do the Google Mail thing. Mine only worked after I had deleted all entries on my SIM card with my own umber on it and also all the contacts in my Google Mail contacts list with my number on it. I think it also only worked when I added my Google Mail email address to the aforementioned contact.

Right, so:

1) Used the app linked above to add 'my number'.

2) Added myself on Google Contacts online.

3) My phone synced; I'm now in my own phonebook with my google picture.

4) I tried syncing with facebook, but it doesn't seem to recognize that I'm the same person, so user pic wasn't downloaded :/

5) My 'messages' picture turned from a grey box to the grey Android picture.

Yep, Google and Facebook don't like each other very much at the moment. I'm not sure how to use the profile pics in that.

As for messaging avatar, are you able to edit it at all by holding down on the picture for a couple of seconds? Other than that, I don't really know what to suggest. I can't recall whether I ever had the grey android picture or not. I remember that there was some weirdness when I was adding myself to my Google Mail contacts in that afer I synced with my phone I disappeared from my Google Contacts. Might be worth checking that you are still there. Maybe also try starting again, removing any entry relating to yourself or your phone number from both the phone and from Google Mail. Check there isn't an entry for you on the SIM card, because mine had a number of entries there (mainly GIffGaff service numbers) that did not display in my phone's contacts list.

I'll see if I can dig out a list of the URLs I visited when trying to sort the problem myself. There were quite a few different suggestions. Don't give up just yet.

Oh, and check your own entry in your phone's contacts list to ensure your mobile phone number is designated as 'mobile'.

Try this google search for other threads/pages on this issue. It seems it is not limited to the San Francisco.

Aha! I think I figured it out.

1) Used the app linked above to add 'my number'.

2) Added myself on Google Contacts online, making sure to add the picture I wanted there, and have my number set as 'Mobile', matching the number I put in 1) above.

3) Synced my phone with contacts - this created a contact as in 2), with the correct pic. It also recognized that it was 'me', as under Messaging, the grey box turned into a grey Android.

4) Restarted the phone.

5) Ta-da!

I just went into the Contacts list, entered a contact called "Me" with my number and a snazzy pic.

That doesn't always work; it certainly didn't for me.

Glad it is finally working. Was it just the restart that did it?

THE EASIEST WAY

The easiest way to do this is to click on the picture of your no existent icon in the message thread. Then do "add to contacts"

Then view it in contacts, and select "edit contact" and change the picture in the same way you would with any other contact.

How did you get the my number app to install? :/

I suspect it just worked for him in the usual way. I suspect the installation doesn't work on certain ROMs or something. I could not get it to install no matter what I tried while others report no problems whatsoever.
