Hi all I bought a Vega tablet a couple of weeks ago and as a complete android newbie have spent a lot of time getting to grips with this os. One of the first things which I did was to use the r7 rom and most of the apps worked great but I have a couple of issues which I cannot resolve. In Hotmail on the 'normal' internet browser I can log in, switch to linked accounts and retrieve my mail with no problem but I can't send a reply or compose new mail. A click in the 'TO' box brings up a keyboard. A click on the 'SUBJECT' box also gives me the keyboard . BUT clicking in the message space does nothing. IE I get no keyboard to interface with the tablet. This problem is occurring both in Hotmail and Gmail.

Q1 Is this normal behaviour for a keyboardless device.

Q2 Is there a workaround

Q3 Is this a known problem and if so is there a permanent fix

Without being able to access my mail this piece of kit is nothing more than an expensive toy and as such is useless to me. Cheers B

Q1) I have experienced the same and failed to find a way round it.

Q2) Either use the Mobile version of hotmail or better still the standard mail client that comes with the Vega to read and respond to emails. You could also try other browsers such as Opera or Dolphin.

Q3) I don't know but suspect that the standard browser cannot handle hotmail. Hopefully we will get a ROM for Gingerbread or Honeycomb and this will have a browser that can do a better job.

Have you tried Dolphin Browser HD with hotmail's page?

There seem to be a number of free Hotmail front-end apps in the Market which might help you get around your current problems until such time as the Android client for this email system is available. There is also a useful blog on the topic of Hotmail on Android here where some people suggest active sync already works. Never tried using Hotmail on the Vega myself but hopefully the above information will be of help.

Thanks guys I was already suspecting that there is a huge fault with the mail apps.

Anyone out there running an unmodded vega? If so does the mail work with the factory settings?

There is no fault really, Hotmail is crap, IMAP is industry standard for remote mail and Hotmail doesn't use it, Activesync is a _awful_ proprietary mess. Is anyone surprised that the Hotmail Web front-end doesn't degrade gracefully?

You can use Pop3 just fine with the default android email client, but then you get the usual problem of either mail only being on one device or nut updating its "read" status.

If you open up a gmail acount you can actually have all of your hotmail email filter straight into it. Or start a new Yahoo mail account, or any email provider that's not Microsoft.

Working Gmail....ok so I have given up on hotmail but not one to be defeated persevered with gmail. Setting to plain text and using the pad in portrait gives access to a working keyboard. Landscape + rich text or either one of these settings wont work on my device. Weird eh! But happpily a workaround which I can use without too much messing about. Thanks for your info on hotmail guys you have saved me a lot of brain strain B.

Q1. - No

Q2. - Use frontend to access POP3 and not the online interface.

Q3. - Dont know but with Hotmail I have had the same problem on my normal PC before I upgraded to Win7. Couldnt write messages with Hotmail when running in Firefox and had to switch back to IE every time I needed to use Hotmail. The problem is with the websites, they all try to be over fancy with how everything works. Just go look at all the extra C**P added into the code and JS scripts of a webpage when you download it - was never a problem in early days when everything was simple HTML.

You can use IMAP with Hotmail, Google will take you to loads of sites with details but Activesync is the way to go. Can't remember the details but there's plenty of help for setting up on the web. In essence, you set it up as an Exchange account rather than POP3 or IMAP. Been using it in K9 for a couple of months, no issues for me. Hotmail mobile also works well, at least in Dolphin and Miren which are the two browsers I use.

All of this said, I only use Hotmail for "throw away" emails and only check it every few weeks so I've turned off push notifications.

Cheers
