I think that's not possible to do without patching large pieces of code in base framework jar. Maybe you could backport changes to cyanogenmod 6.1 or AOSP 2.2.x.. but that's pointless.

Text selection gingerbread way (without arrows) could be achieved installing gingerbread keyboard..
