Guest richardw1992 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 If you click on "features & specs" under "hardware & software" it still says "Android V2.1"
Guest gooner10 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Hi, I am a novice android user still using v2.1 orange stock . Do i need to change anything in my AP settings as per orange link , rather confused as San Fran doesn`t have 2.2 yet does it? Thanks
Guest TonyLeMesmer Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Says the same on the Hero page http://help.orange.co.uk/orangeuk/support/personal/382739 and that's not getting 2.2

Guest The Sorcerer Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 When it says WIFI does it mean open wifi networks or 3G/2G access, and has anyone else put in their own password? Yep, I use a 63-character password and it took that alright
Guest gooner10 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Yep, I use a 63-character password and it took that alright  Do you mean for your wifi or 3g access. I have a password for my router, but i have never changed anything in my APN settings.
Guest Pekoltia Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 According to an email from Orange I received today 2.2 is a nonstarter for the San Francisco. I understand from your email that you would like to know if Orange are planning to update the San Francisco phone from the 2.1 to 2.2 Android. I confirm, this is something Orange would not be able to offer. The Android Application will be down to the manufacture when they make the phones. We have no update for the release of the 2.2 Android Application for the San Francisco. If you would like to download the 2.2 Android application you can visit www.nokia.co.uk website and download the application there, however Orange would not be liable for any software damage that may arise while you download the application.

So Orange confirm they know absolutely nothing about mobile phones, who manufactures mobile phones, the difference between an OS and application or what ecosystem supports the mobile phone OS.

Guest wbaw Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 So Orange confirm they know absolutely nothing about mobile phones, who manufactures mobile phones, the difference between an OS and application or what ecosystem supports the mobile phone OS. Exactly. They might be one of the biggest mobile operators & retailers in the UK, but they don't really have a clue what a mobile phone is, if there are any differences between them, or anything. So, ignore any technical information on the orange website, more than likely that it's wrong. I think what they mean is they wont be updating anybody's handsets, because their staff wouldn't be able to cope & they don't see any point in spending any money once they've got yours.

Thats why open source is so damn good, if your phone company can't fix it then hopefully someone else can. Really when you think about it, how many people unlocked their phones and got off the orange network. It's a freedom phone.
Guest fonix232 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Wow. Orange says, Nokia OVI makes Android? Whatthe hell????
Guest Matthew Ferguson Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Guys, everyone knows Orange is releasing a new Gingerbread ROM that'll be perfect for the san fran next wednesday.
Guest jurrasstoil Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 so, you are judging orange's capabilities by an e-mail from a low-level support person  That person had obv 0 clue what's going on, so whether they'll have a 2.2 update or not is still unknown. iirc there were others who wrote the support and they were told that there will be a 2.2 update. I'll just wait for the rom or an official press statement.
Guest Gibbo501 Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Guys, everyone knows Orange is releasing a new Gingerbread ROM that'll be perfect for the san fran next wednesday. Hmmm, Orange told me that Microsoft weren't making any more Android OSes as its now called Windows Phone 7.

If they allow to such idiots work at them, they care nothing about their contractors (us), thus they are s***. And also, that guy could've asked someone else who KNOWS what is it about.

And also, that guy could've asked someone else who KNOWS what is it about. oh come on, seriously? you seem to have quite a romantic/unworldly idea about how big companies and their support departments work. By your definition absolutely every company is s***. Example: I have a bag filled with tiny boxes. You are allowed to pick one box and open it. You pick one and there is dog poo in it. What can you say about the remaining boxes? Edited February 28, 2011 by jurrasstoil

Okay, it's a fair comment about how 'bad' employees alter your perceptions more than good ones (in this case, they may not be 'bad' as much as just 'misinformed') - but let's face it, customer service reps are an easy target. In an increasingly technical world, the responsibility for understanding the details in any device falls increasingly on the user. Orange understand how phones work, guys - they just can't force that information on to everyone who works for them (or - in a more likely scenario - they tried and some people didn't listen). The customer service industry remains primarily under-skilled and under-paid, so I wouldn't expect those answering the phones on a day-to-day basis to comprehend the subtleties of Android OS implementation. It's frustrating. Luckily, we have the internet. More on topic: I don't think we'll see any Blade 2.2 upgrades from Orange - I'd be surprised if they were willing to make the leap for the sake of a customer subset that is firstly PAYG and secondly willing to jump ship at any opportunity (or immediately, in some [most?] cases). If - and that's a big if - Orange choose to do any more low-cost Android phones, their next will have to be 2.2. Until then...

What can you say about the remaining boxes? Jurrasstoil - I take your point, but hasn't Noel Edmunds recently made another fortune using just such a concept? IIRC that programme was complete ****, so maybe fonix232 isn't so far off afterall...?
