Guest Thermostat9 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 I did a full backup of my working JJ ROM to try CM7 using Clockwork Mod. Before installing I used Clockwork Mod to wipe the cache and wiped data/factory reset. The install didn't work for some reason, so I wiped the cache and wiped data/factory reset again and restored the image. There was no error on rebuilding the image but the phone won't boot. I get the green android but when it gets to the 'android' screen it just keeps running the animation, occasionally blanking the screen and retiring to the scrolling 'android' logo. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do to restore my phone to a working condition? I've tried a search but have no idea what I should be looking for.......
Guest oldfella Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 try removing the battery and repeat the wipe before the restore ?
Guest Thermostat9 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 try removing the battery and repeat the wipe before the restore ? Thanks, I had done that. No difference. I've mounted the SD card and copied over an original Orange install backup that I have successfully restored before. It installs successfully but this just gives me the green android, Orange animation then Orange logo and cycles back to the green android....... Gulp. Anyone else got any good ideas how to get out of this boot loop? Is there anything I can do with Clockwork Mod?
Guest richardw1992 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) A very similar thing has happened to me recently running JJ9 I did a nandroid backup, all went to plan, when I came to restore it a few hours later after trying out some other roms, it just boot looped on the silver android animation. Turns out the problem was caused be a theme I had applied to the rom. I also applied the partial wake fix for JJ9. Both the theme and the partial wake fix are flashed on using clockwork, and they both change similar files. However for different purposes. The theme I was using (one of frankish' green gingerbread themes) apparently has unsigned files, therefore when you come to restore the backup it recognises them as rogue files or something, and so it does not fully restore. However if you have not themed it and have applied the partial wake fix, then perhaps that causes a similar problem, as it was just a 'work around fix' ? If you have installed neither a theme or the partial wake fix, and you did a back up of stock JJ9 then i'm afraid I cant really help you.. except for saying that you should wipe everything, install fresh JJ9.zip, redownload all your apps etc get everything how you like it. THEN go into clockworkmod and WITHOUT wiping anything, click on restore, then advanced restore, choose your latest backup, and choose to restore data and cache etc, everything apart from "system" as that is most probably the corrupted part of your backup. That will restore all your messages, contacts, calendar, angry birds etc.. everything essentially. Rich Edited February 26, 2011 by richardw1992

Thanks for the detailed reply. As far as I know I haven't any theme or partial wake fix (unless either was part of JJ9) I've tried to reinstall a fresh JJ9 (cache and data wiped etc) but that is also boot looping..... This is maddening. I've successfully created and reinstalled backups before what can be causing this?
Guest richardw1992 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 As far as I know I haven't any theme or partial wake fix (unless either was part of JJ9) Nope, they are both add ons which you would have to have flashed separately on top of the rom - so that clears up it being the problem I had... I've tried to reinstall a fresh JJ9 (cache and data wiped etc) but that is also boot looping..... I'm assuming you have just wiped data and cache from the "home screen" in clockworkmod? Bare in mind this will lose you everything, but at least the phone will turn on then: Reboot back into clockworkmod, - "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition" (as per normal rom install), - go into advanced, and then "wipe dalvik cache" - go into mounts and storage and then "format boot", "format system", "format data", "format cache", "format sdcard (not necessary, but as long as you back up all the files you want to keep (as they will ALL be wiped off the sdcard) it may help to solve the problem), "format sd-ext". - go into advanced and reboot recovery - Install JJ9 zip from sdcard. - plug in charger, "reboot system now" hopefully that will get you out of the bootloop! Guest Thermostat9 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 - "wipe data/factory reset", "wipe cache partition" (as per normal rom install), - go into advanced, and then "wipe dalvik cache" I tried that but it didn't seem to do much. I tried to reinstall the backup. Nope. Rewiped. I tried the original Orange backup. Nope. Rewiped. I figured I was in for the long haul, downloaded CM7 nightly build 6 and it hung without installing. Rewiped. But I noticed after I'd tried to reinstall JJ9 again that it flashed past the 'intro' screen! So I tried to prod it when it appeared. Several goes round missing it (it can't have been on screen for more than a fraction of a second) and I was in. Then I could get to the main screen. Poked around, it all seemed to do what it should do, so I turned it off and on again and it rebooted! Hurrah! I tried then to just reinstall 'Data' from the backup (from your earlier post) and see what was there. Imagine my surprise when I found all my apps, wallpaper and everything was as it had been! Shut down and reboot, it all came back fine. I'm leaving CM7 alone for now. I have no idea why it didn't install and I had a headbuttingly annoying afternoon but it seems to have come back to life!

Thats the beauty of the Nandroid backup! even when it goes wrong most of the data can still be salvaged  Glad it all worked out for you! i'm in exactly the same boat as you now, lying low on the ROM changing for a bit after my colossal mess up :)
