Guest replicant6 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Hi folks Recently bought a San Francisco from Orange and I'm very pleased with the phone apart from one thing, I think my moby might be deaf? I bought the San Francisco to replace my Nokia 5800 but there is a big difference in signal strength. eg The Nokia has 5 bar 3G/2G signal strength but the San Francisco has only 1 bar 3G/2G signal. Both phones are on Orange and sitting side by side. Therefore, is there a problem with my new moby? Any advice and/or opinions would be very much appreciated. Cheers Colin
Guest wbaw Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 I think it's cosmetic. 'Bars' aren't a standard unit of measuring mobile signal strength, 4 bars on one phone could be the same as 1 on another.
Guest demonkus Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 I had this problem i would lose signal all together.I fixed it by changing the network operator to orange t-mobile in the network settings now i get full signal..only thing is you can only use 2g.I had to change it because i was missing calls/texts but try and keep orange if you need 3g. settings wireless and network mobile networks gsm/umts tick use only 2g network operators
Guest richardw1992 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 as Wbaw said, they probably have exactly the same signal strength, but are portrayed differently through the different operating systems the phones use. One way to test, make a phone call from each one to the same number, if the san fran has noticeably chopped up sound or the other person has trouble hearing you, then perhaps you should consider a warranty return. If it seems the same as the nokia, then I think enough has been said, and its all explained
Guest replicant6 Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 Hi Folks Thanks for the advice. It could well possibly be that each phone registers the signal strength differently, as I can't tell the difference phone quality or data wise. Mind you, I've just tried giffgaff and the 3G signal does seem to register between 2 - 3 bars which it never did on Orange. Cheers Colin

Cheers Colin That is because GiffGaff uses the o2 network, so the chances are o2's 3g signal is simply just stronger than orange's 3g signal in your area, hence the reason you get more bars on giffgaff than orange in the same phone.
Guest Vansphone Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) I changed my Nokia 5230 for the SF and there is a big difference in signal strength. The SF shows no bars while the Nokia shows 4. I have tested them both in the house. I can make and receive a phone call from anywhere in my house at any time using the Nokia. Often the SF has no service. This is when they are sitting next to each other. I live on the margins of the signal area, but this is no problem at all for the Nokia but a big problem for the SF. Guest replicant6 Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Vansphone, now that is very interesting your situation is identical to mine. As others have said, it may well be a cosmetic issue, it's difficult to tell, as I need to compare the two phones in more locations. However, initally, the SF does appear to have dreadful reception compared to the Nokia 5800. Perhaps the internal aerial in the SF's aren't as good?

However, initally, the SF does appear to have dreadful reception compared to the Nokia 5800. Perhaps the internal aerial in the SF's aren't as good? I mentioned this in another forum and was told that Nokia are very good at designing internal aerials for their phones and therefore often produce phones with very good reception. According to the the 3 coverage map, I live in a tiny island of poor reception. 3 say it is "Outdoor only". My family all have 3 phones (because we are on the old free 3 to 3 tariff). Everyone else has Nokia phones and all get very good reception all the time inside the house. My SF gets no service in some parts of the house and cannot be relied on to always be connected to a service. As the SF is a second phone, this is not a big problem for me because I use WiFi for most of the things I want to do with the phone. However, if you live in a marginal signal area and the SF is going to be your principle phone I would think carefully about reception issues. Just for clarity I am not saying the SF is bad I am just saying that in my experience Nokia is better at getting a signal. Edited February 27, 2011 by Vansphone
