Do you suffer poor WiFi reception?

Guys... I found something *very* strange... Looks like I am an owner of the faulty Blade, too bad, anyway when I was experimenting with phone I came across some strange results... If I make a gap in my phone's back cover (more than 5 mm wide on top or bottom) I suddenly see a load of WiFi access points and also I get strong and stable connection with my own router!

At first I wanted to tear my phone apart to re-seat all those little connectors, but I started with the WiFi analyzer still running and suddenly... WOW! I was shocked! All those networks suddenly popped out on my screen! Looks like maybe the back plate is made of some kind of plastic mixed with a metal, that is cutting the WiFi signal out? What do you think? It's very strange..

I took my back cover off and didn't see any difference. Didn't find new WiFis and didn't get better reception.

But do both of you have Blade suffering poor signal issue? I can repeat this as many times I want and results are always the same for me - 1 (my own) AP visible with back cover on and even 7 APs with cover off! That is even more strange and makes me think - what the hell did they make my phone's cover with? Because it acts as a Faraday cage!

See attached pictures I just took - 'before' and 'after' are from the room where my AP is and in the kitchen you can see the difference that back cover makes...

Also, I tried to put some material (paper as isolator and next aluminum foil as conductor) between the back of the phone and the cover to see if this makes any difference. However, when I finally close the back cover the signal drops as usually...

@wbaw: What do you mean I'm holding it wrong? I've noticed WiFi signal is weaker if I put my fingers to the top-left area on the back (where I guess the antenna is). But just see the before and after pictures - I am not holding the phone at all, as it's laying on a floor.

The holding it wrong part was a bad joke - http://news.yahoo.com/s/ytech_gadg/ytech_gadg_tc2844

I saw no difference at all in wifi signal when i took the back off & put it back on.

I think the wifi aerial is at the bottom of the phone, below the battery, but I'm not sure where I read that. Def looks like some type of aerial there & it could be easy to damage when taking the back off.

Hahahah... I'm sorry, wbaw, I didn't get it at first, but of course I remember that iPhone issue.

As to antenna, I did a quick test, I took a piece of aluminum foil and covered different parts of the phone with WiFi Analyzer running. It turns out that WiFi antenna is on the top of the phone, as covering this area weakens the signal most. Maybe it is GPS aerial on the bottom?

Anyway... Do you have any ideas on these strange WiFi results?

Maybe it's the mobile aerial at the bottom. I had a diagram somewhere, maybe in the instruction book? I think gps & bluetooth are top right.

Anyway, no idea what's causing your strange results, i can just confirm that it doesn't make any difference at all for me.

The book has a diagram of where the antennae are located. Although wifi isn't mentioned [stroke chin in pondering manner].

GPS is up near the power button, Blutooth is just bellow (and next to) the USB port and the and the one simply marked "antenna" is bellow the battery on the "Home" button side.

Maybe the issue is they forgot to fit an ariel on your phone ;-)

OK, thanks for testing everyone. That's weird that no one else can confirm my observations, but I gave you the proof on my photos. So, I think I will try to replace the phone anyway, because I can't just walk around with my back cover off...

Ok... So it must be a mechanical antenna defect. I guess when the cover is on it puts pressure on some fragile antenna parts and causing signal to drop.

That'd also explain why no one else could successfully apply that magic "back cover off" fix.

Oh my god, I thought I had one of those faulty SF, but your trick helped my reception of wifi signals a lot.

I can confirm that the reception is much better without the cover (mine is the grey one).

I dont think its the pressure of the cover that's doing the difference, because if I just rest the phone on its back cover the signal worsens.

Any body has extra white covers to try please?

I believe that when you remove the cover, signal reception improves just because you are in touch with antenna.

The problem is from the antennas and their contacts all over the phone, if contacts don't make good connection with the antenna or if microstrip antenna itself is damaged.

Check these:

If your phone has still warranty, just return it. It's more simple and safe.

If you can't have assistance (like me here in Italy), it worth to try the methods I've linked.
