Can someone give me a blow by blow account in how to get Android market on my Vega.

I am not tech minded and quite frankly looking at how easy it's supposed to be is a little daunting?(It doesn't look that straight forward to me)

Hello,

Got my first ever Android device (Advent Vega) yesterday and have been reading up on how to get the market place and custom ROMs today - I have to say for a newbie to the world of Android and Tablets this has been baffling!

Whilst I've been in and around PCs for years and dabbled a little with Linux I have found I'm like a fish out of water with all this.

I can't get my head around the order in which to do things, how software updating actually works and where to start.

I have figured out that Paul's ROM is the way to go and that in order to get that I should install CWM first but I'm miffed by the "how" and by that I mean the really basic what do I do on the PC, what do I do on the Vega, what goes where, when and how. I'm looking for a step by step idiot's guide, something to overcome the initial inertia of "What the hell do I do?!?"

Searching just seems to give me ever more confusing posts that all start from a position of some knowledge - if it's always assumed you know how to turn the thing on, and you don't, then no amount of instruction is going to work :-)

I have figured out how to turn it on and get on-line and do email, a bit of surfing etc but the rest is alchemy to me.

So, is there a kind soul with a little patience who could point me at the idiots guide to "stuff you should do to your Vega once it's out of the box".

OK, first things first.

Forget CWM just for now, you don't need it. You might want it later, but let's take it easy eh?

First thing you need to know is how to put your Vega into recovery mode. That is the mode in which you can flash a new ROM.

1. On your Vega, go to Settings->About device and post back with your "Model number" and "Kernel version". Then we know where you are starting from as there are several versions of the Vega out there and we'll begin with getting you on the latest software.

2. Go to myadventvega, http://www.myadventvega.co.uk/, then Downloads and download the "Full software update manual".

3. Plug your charger into the Vega and connect the USB cable to your PC.

4. Open up Device Manager on your PC.

5. Practice getting the Vega into recovery mode - the instructions are in that manual you download. NB. You will see nothing, not even the backlight, on your Vega in recovery mode. If you do see anything, you are not in recovery mode. When you are in recovery mode, you will see a new device in Windows, either APX (probably with an exclamation mark) or "NVidia Harmony recovery device".

Come back when you get to that point and practice a little more. With practice, you should be able to get into recovery at the drop of a hat. You will need to be comfortable doing this.

DO NOT TRY TO GO ANY FURTHER :huh:

NB. Holding down the Vega power button for at least 6 seconds will completely power off the device. Once completely powered off, you need to hold the power button down for a couple of seconds, until the backlight comes on, to reboot. If it is just asleep, you only need to press the power button quickly.

When you come back, the next step (and the one where most people struggle) is to install the correct USB drivers in Windows. Unless you are skilled, please do not attempt this yourself, come back and I'll walk you through it. Please also report your Windows version and, if Windows 7, 32 or 64 bit.

1. Model number is "Vega", Android version is "2.2", EC Version is "1.9.0" and Kernel version is "2.6.32.9_P10_v1.09_20110211_DIX", Build Number is "harmony 2.2 FRF91 20110211.101539"

5. Practice getting the Vega into recovery mode Done, seems simple enough and I got the "Found New Hardware" prompt telling me windows needs to install a driver for my APX. And that's where it sits at the moment.

I have downloaded Paul's ROM "r8" and see there's a USB driver folder there now I've unzipped it.

PC is running Vista Ultimate Service Pack 2, 32 bit

Cool, you're running the latest Advent software so no need to flash a new ROM and therefore, no need for recovery. However, as you can get into recovery, it's a good idea to install the correct USB drivers now in case you want to (or need to) flash a new ROM in the future - and there's a good chance you will.

On the myadventvega site, download the USB drivers, "USB system driver". Download and unzip it somewhere obvious and memorable.

In the new hardware wizard, select "don't search online". Select "I don't have the disk". Select browse and browse to the folder where you unzipped the drivers. Click next and if prompted, select "install anyway". Click all the way through the wizard and the APX device should change to "NVidia Harmony Recovery Device" (or similar, recalling that from memory). The recovery drivers are now install and ready for future use.

Now for the "Android Debug Bridge" drivers. The Android Debug Device (ADB) is a special device loaded by the Vega which enables a PC application to communicate with the Vega to install software and run commands using a special application called ADB.EXE or, in the case of the mcr pack, ADB-WINDOWS.EXE.

With your Vega running normally, go to Settings->Applications->Development and select "USB Debugging". Click OK.

A new device will appear in device manager, or the add hardware wizard will start again.

If a new device appears, right click and select Uninstall and also select Delete drivers. Right click on "My Computer" in device manager and select "Add legacy hardware".

You now have the found new hardware or the add legacy hardware wizard. Use the same steps as above to install the USB drivers you downloaded with the mcr pack. If this goes well, you will see a new device class, "Android phone", with a device within the class called "Android ADB composite interface" or similar.

You now have all the correct drivers loaded. With ADB turned on, run install-windows.bat in the mcr pack. Let it finish, reboot and enjoy your newly set free Vega!!!

If you have trouble with the ADB drivers, delete whatever device appears when you select "USB debugging", delete the drivers and try again. Most common mistakes are not having "USB debugging" turned on (you'll see a little Android ladybird in the status bar) or not deleting the drivers when uninstalling to try again. If you don't delete, Windows will simply load the last drivers it found which of course takes your straight back to where you where!

Thanks for that, I have made progress, I think - I installed the USB driver from the myadventvega site and I saw it pop up as NVIDIA. However, when I come out of recover and start up the Vega I don't see the NVIDIA driver in Device Manager, the Vega connects OK, the Vega Transfer companion starts on the PC and I get the USB symbol on the Vega. So I turned on debug and got the bug icon on the Vega but nothing changed on the PC, no new device in device manager (should I have the USB icon and the bug icon?). The only way I get to see the "NVIDIA USB Boot-recovery driver for mobile devices" is if I go back into recovery mode.

Here's a little more - I tried watching Device Manager carefully. When I connect and power up the Vega I see it refresh 4 times, seems to collapse and expand the tree but each time there's no difference (I'm looking at the Universal Serial Bus Controllers tab). I doesn't seem to matter what I do I can only get that NVIDIA driver to show up in recovery mode :-(

You're close, stick with it :huh:

Unlike most devices, the Vega has 3 sets of drivers, it is effectively 3 different devices.

Recovery is one. This is only used to flash a new ROM and is the mode you get into by pressing back, power, back etc. You've already installed the drivers for this mode and you can now forget about it. You will only see the "NVidia" drivers when you are in recovery and seeing those driverrs is the only way to know that you are in recovery. For now, forget you ever heard about recovery :)

ADB is the second device and is activated when you select "USB Debugging" on the Vega. The drivers for this are the "Android Phone" drivers.

The third device is a USB mass storage device which is what you get when USB Debugging is turned off and is handled by Windows automatically.

It's the ADB one you need. Again, forget about recovery. You cannot be in recovery and see the ADB drivers and you cannot be in ADB and see the recovery drivers. They are mutually exclusive.

What you need to do now is find the USB device that appears when you connect the Vega.

With USB debugging turned on, plug in the Vega and watch the device which appears. Right click that device and uninstall it. Then right click My Computer and select add legacy hardware then proceed as above to install the drivers in the mcr pack.

More progress!

OK, so I did what you said and figured out that the USB device that loaded when the Vega started was one of two "USB Mass Storage Devices", I deleted the right one and followed your instructions (the explanation helped greatly too) and we now have "Android Composite ADB Interface" showing when in debug mode on the Vega,

Right, so now I am going to run Paul's ROM install and report back.

Oh and can I just say that this place is excellent, no one had a go at me for being a bit thick and I got my problem solved in a few hours, I'm going to get me a paid subscription now, I hope I can do it from the Vega!

No worries. Hope you enjoy it.

You'll find a whole bunch of little niggles with flash, iPlayer, streaming music, what video formats can be played, accelerometer in games, faking out your location for GPS apps etc etc. All answered in here somewhere.

Hello Im New To Android and i just bought my vega yesterday i wanted to get the android market app but people say you need To Hack It Or something ?

Im Running On KERNAL VERSION 2.6 32.9_P10_v1.09_20110211_DIX

All i want to do is have the android market

Also I downloaded the android market thinking it will work but just flashes and closes

PLEASE HELP is there anyway of Not installing custom firmware ?

I have downloaded and unzipped a file called Android ADB API(Winusb). It is 59.5kb in size. Is this the correct file. If so how do I get it installed on my vega?

Where did this download come from? Whatever it is, it's not for installing on the Vega. The only thing you need to do to install anything on the Vega is to run "install-windows.bat". In turn, the only thing required to do that is to install the ADB USB device drivers.

The only thing to concentrate on is getting a new device class in device manager called Android Phone with a device called ADB Composite Debug Interface. Without this, you cannot move forward. I've attached a pic to show how this should look.

Follow these steps, exactly, in order don't skip or add anything. If you get stuck, stop at that step and come back.

• Make sure that on the Vega, you have USB Debugging selected on (Settings->Applications->Development)
  
• Unplug your Vega from the PC
  
• Open device manager
  
• Plug in your Vega
  
• Whatever device appears, right click to uninstall and also select delete drivers - do not uninstall without deleting, Windows will simply reinstall the same drivers
  
• Do not restart or scan for new hardware.
  
• Right click My Computer and select "Add legacy hardware"
  
• Select install manually
  
• Show all devices
  
• Have disk
  
• Browse to the drivers included with the mcr8 pack.

1. Nvidia Tegra 2 usb device and

2. Samsung HD502hi ata device

Which one do i use to uninstall?

Please also confirm that you have USB debugging selected on your Vega. You should also see a small ladybird icon in the Vega's notification bar.

I am not using a USB hub(straight into USB at front of PC) When I unplug the vega it doesn't disappear and I have debugging selected.
