Guest That-Guy Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 I am trying to help a friend with a Desire (I have ZTE Blade Myself) He using Visionary to Temp Root the Phone after it has booted by selecting the "Temp Root Now" button. I installed ROM Manager and installed Clockwork through it (it says it is installed anyway) but when I choose the "Reboot into Recovery" option it reboots but just comes up with a Red Question Mark. What have I done wrong? I don't know much about the Desire so that may be the problem :) We are trying to Backup the Phone then move to another ROM like Cyanogen. Any help getting past the Red Question Mark would be great. Thanks in Advance
Guest ferieguru Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Have a look at this post Fake-flash by Koush, launching recovery on your device without a PC
Guest bpivk Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 We are trying to Backup the Phone then move to another ROM like Cyanogen. There is not temp root option for Desire as far as I know. We use unrevoked (google is your friend) then make a nandroid backup and flash another rom.

Temp Root definatly works with Visionary as it installs SU and allowed me to run Titanium Backup and Remove a few system apps, Titanium Backup also shows up in the Super User App. Only down side is you have to do it every time you reboot. Thanks for the info on the Fake Flash I will give this a try when I finish work. Am I right in thinking that Rebooting into Recovery from ROM Manager will not work on the desire at all?
Guest bpivk Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) Am I right in thinking that Rebooting into Recovery from ROM Manager will not work on the desire at all?No. It will work if you've installed Clockwork recovery on the phone via unrevoked as I've written in my previous post. And did you try Visionary on Desire? It didn't work the last time some users used it (it works on Desire HD though). Removing system apps on Desire even when you're rooted is impossible without S-OFF (outside of recovery of course). They only restore when you reboot the phone because NAND is write protected unless you remove the protection (via alpharev's S-OFF). Edited March 1, 2011 by bpivk

Yes Visionary is working just fine, sometimes it loads and you just get a blank screen so you just exit and re-load it and it comes up and roots just fine. The phone is O2 Branded if that makes a difference. Some of the bundled apps like facebook (no option to un-install via Manage Apps) have been removed and not come back after re-boot. Will have a play tonight with the fake flash etc and see how I get on. Thanks for all your help
