Then it might be goodbye for my vega
Guest Lennyuk Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Hopefully the exclusive deal wear off soon and other outlet start to sell it and hopefully the price goes down as wat happened to Samsung tab. Then it might be goodbye for my vega only thing is, the tab mainly dropped in price because it wasn't selling well! Samsung had a panic which has lead to the new 10.1inch and soon an 8.9inch. The xoom probably will sell quite well so I wouldn't expect the price to drop much, if any.
Guest terminaljunkie Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 £449? At twice what I paid for the Vega and with not much more functionality....nah, I'll stick!
Guest MaxiP Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) £449? At twice what I paid for the Vega and with not much more functionality....nah, I'll stick! Kind of agree - can it do that much more than my Vega to make we need one....don't think so. And yes I meant *need* one rather than want as I now can't live without my Vega  Edited March 1, 2011 by MaxiP
Guest jezwick Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 £449? At twice what I paid for the Vega and with not much more functionality....nah, I'll stick! That screen has now changed on the PC World website, it now doesn't show a price, assuming that 449EUROs is being touted as the correct price it will be £380ish ..
Guest MonkeyBoy451 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 £449? At twice what I paid for the Vega and with not much more functionality....nah, I'll stick! The price of £449 has since been removed from the PC World website, so it could potentially be less when finally announced, or it could be more. Either way, at £449 and £200 more than the Vega - what exactly are you getting for that extra cash... here it is: 1. 32GB onboard memory - upgradeable with microsd once Honeycomb supports SD. 2. better screen with better viewing angles & GORILLA GLASS 3. 5mp rear camera to shoot 720p HD video 4. 2mp front facing camera 5. 1280x800 720HD screen 6. android 3.0 honeycomb 6. aGPS 7. 802.11n wireless Just a few things off the top of my head without looking too closely with a microscope. Would you say these extras are worth £200 more?

Maybe, there are some nice things in there but for me they are all extras I would like but my vega is pretty much a gadget\toy and a convenience really not something I would have spent over £400 on. If the only tablets around were £400+ then I simply wouldn't have bought a tablet. I think this and the vega are competing for different markets really.

Would you say these extras are worth £200 more? No. Not for me because I don't use or need GPS on a tablet, would not use tablet for photography or video, not bothered about gorilla glass(?) and the existing resolution is fine for me. I don't actually use the Vega front facing camera, 802.11 would good along with more memory & better viewing angles, but the rest is pretty lame for another £200 Edited March 1, 2011 by terminaljunkie
Guest Stormbringer2010 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 I will add my bit to the above. I already have a good digital camera so I dont need a better one than my Vega one, I have an Iphone 4 so dont care for some of the othe GPS functions. I bought an Advent Vega because I did not fancy spending £400+ for a Tablet (Toy) that I will use mainly for watching movies and browsing internet whist tethered to my Iphone  If I wanted to spend that money I would have prob bought an Ipad before I bought my Iphone 4. I like my Vega and with people like Paul helping us with it, surely it will only get better... P.s Where is Paul, I have not seen him post here for ages, he must be having VERY long holiday.. LOL
Guest montage Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 As above i bought a vega for good specs at a most importantly good price point.. i wouldnt pay over 350 if i didnt have a vega.. and now i have a vega i wouldnt give it the time of day
Guest McSpoon Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 I agree, the XOOM is nice but I wouldn't pay anything more than £350 for it. Android is moving at such a fast pace that we're replacing our phones/tablets in less than a year and the prices should reflect that. The Vega got it right - as a reasonably cheap transitional device. At the current rate Android 3.1 could be released before the XOOM even arrives in the UK shops. It looks like Google have been giving away XOOMs at GDC today. I'm wondering if Motorola might giveaway some at their App Summit event tonight in San Francisco (if you happen to be there). But sadly they don't seem to have any events planned in the UK. I would happily accept a free XOOM.
Guest pozmu Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Would you say these extras are worth £200 more? If viewing angles are ok... maybe not really "worth it", but there is no alternative with good screen (with Android)
Guest MonkeyBoy451 Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Well the PC World site now has the Xoom available for pre-order and the link works - went all the way through to checkout, but couldnt get any codes working for money off!! the bad news is, the price is now: £499.99 Bummer!
Guest .stu Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Bummer! Funny you should say that coz atthatprice that's exactly where they can shove it. It doesn't matter how much I would like one, nor does it matter whether I think it is value for money, at that price I just can't afford one.

I'm not a fan of apple's industrial(*) design but the new ipad looks good actually - makes the original one look clunky and square tho. And for the price they will shift a ton of them. Goona be some serious discounting on the android tablets in the comng months. Doesn't matter how good the honeycomb tabs are on paper, they need to seriously undercut apple's pricing if they want to get a look in. * wtf do they mean by 'industrial' design? They're stuff looks like consumer items to me. Just sounds like marking BS.
Guest Dyonas Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 $499 for the iPad 2 but if things go as they usually do that will translate to almost the same in £ as usual. The iPad is a nice collection of hardware but until they break iOS out of the box it will always be second best (to me) with Android a better choice for a tablet. Given that the Xoom will be £499 when it launches for the WiFi only version I can see prices dropping soon after if they hope to compete. I'm glad in a way that they've done so much with the hardware upgrade in the iPad 2 at the price point they kept since it might make Motorola and co. start chopping their prices down straight away.
Guest Genieuk Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Entry iPad has now been dropped in the UK to £329 after the iPad2 announcement. I'm perfectly happy with my Vega for the time being. Xoom and many other tablets like it will die if their pricing is like it is. All I (and I'm sure many others on here) want and am preying for right now is a Honeycomb port onto the Vega.
Guest jimbo25 Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 All I (and I'm sure many others on here) want and am preying for right now is a Honeycomb port onto the Vega. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed but on Tabletstore they're saying (in this article: http://www.tabletstoreuk.com/why-honeycomb...place-2.x.html) that Smartbook are bringing definitely bringing out a Honeycomb update: German company Smartbook AG have just launched a 10" tablet running on the NVIDIA Tegra 250, an awesome dual-core Cortex A9 chip that will most definitely run Honeycomb. Althought this device has come to market in advance of the release of Motorola's Xoom, at present it is running Android 2.2. This is because Google, although providing Android as open-source, release to prefered developers before making it generally available. As such the big-brands have access to Honeycomb before the smaller brands. None-the-less the new Smartbook Surfer 360 is a fantastic tablet right now and Smartbook AG have assured us that it will run Honeycomb and that customers will be able to upgrade in the future. On the actual product page for the Smartsurfer 360 (at http://www.tabletstoreuk.com/smartbook-sur...eady-p-75.html) they're saying that the update is due in April... So, given they're identical to the Vega we don't have long to wait until an 'official' honeycomb ROM is available (assuming this is reliable information)!
Guest jimbo25 Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 In fact, it's also confirmed on this page http://www.tabletstoreuk.com/honeycomb-tablets-c-32.html with Honeycomb is on it's way. Although no Android 3.0 devices have been released yet (the first release expected to be a very pricey device called the Xoom from Motorola), the following devices will be user upgradable to Honeycomb in April. The screenshot below is of the software already running on the Smartbook 10" Tablet.
Guest ChocolateRobot Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) The iPad2 announcement will kill the Xoom stone dead unless they sort out the price. After all a tablet is little more than a ultra portable netbook with limited functionality. I don't think Android fans need another high profile failure. Edited March 3, 2011 by ChocolateRobot
Guest Dyonas Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I said it elsewhere but I'll say it here too. The iPad 2 coming out with improved specs. and at the same price point is just what is needed. It should give Motorola and other tablet manufacturers a shock and they'll either have to drop prices or make their products much more attractive somehow. The very fact that, according to the images I saw of yesterday's announcement, the highest priced iPad is under $800 is a serious slap in the face to Motorola. They deserved it and if they have any brains they should do something about it, fast.
