Best way to compile custom android ROM?

I am looking to compile a custom Honeycomb ROM for an android tablet but I don't actually know where to start.

I have looked on the android dev site and I know how to compile a kernel - I think! But I don't actually know if I need to compile a kernel from other sites I've looked at.

I basically want to have a custom, somewhat stripped, version of honeycomb for the device without any of the unnecassary parts such as phone controls, text messaging etc.

If someone could point me in the right direction or help me out I would really appreciate it.
