Guest toniwharton Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 Hi, please help! I bought a vega for my grandad who is even less computer tech able than me. All he needs it for is internet browsing, emails, storing photos, eebooks etc. I have tried following Paul's message about downloading R8 Rom but getting no where quick with that. My Mac won't even recognise the vega as new hardware when i plug it in. Can I download skype directly from the internet onto the vega and if so how do I do it? Can you get Kindle or some eebook other than wh smith on vega and how do I get it without getting that kitchen apps thing on the vega? Oh, final question. We keep setting the date and time every time we turn the vega on, but when we turn it off and back on again it keeps resetting to default date and time. Any idea what we are doing wrong? Thanks in advance to anyone who can help
Guest trevor432990 Posted March 1, 2011 Report Posted March 1, 2011 (edited) Hi there .... most of us are relatively new to Android and tablets in general so you are in good company. You can use the Vega out of the box to do most of the things you have suggested you (or your Grandad) need it for but it would be a waste of the machines potential and to unlock that will require a few hours of your time and patience when things go wrong as they inevitably will from time to time. If you are willing to do this then I suggest you read this post which is a kind of FAQ with links to all the information you are likely to need then follow the instructions within them coming back here if you get stuck. The fact that you say your Mac won't see the Vega suggests to me a couple of likely problems a) You don't have USB Debugging switched on the Vega, go to SETTINGS > APPLICATIONS > DEVELOPMENT and make sure it is 'ticked' OR you don't have the correct drivers installed yet in which case you will need to read the USB Driver topic in the link above and follow the instructions to load them. I don't have a Mac so can't explain them personally. As for the clock issue I also had this problem with R8 but in the end I installed a new app called ClockSync off the Android Market which is very good and gives you atomic clock accuracy as well. Stick with it and you should find things start to come together gradually  Edited March 1, 2011 by trevor432990

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help I had similar problems with a 2007 MacBook. Gave up in the end and used windows instead.
Guest JukeUK Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) I have a Mac and there is no response from Mac OS X when you plug the Vega in. No additional drivers are required to install the Modaco ROM. Just make sure USB debugging is enabled as posted earlier, plug your USB cable into the Vega and turn on the Vega. Then open a terminal, navigate to the folder containing the unzipped rom in Terminal and type ./install-mac.sh This will then install the ROM on the Vega. As for the date and time issue, are you completely powering down the Vega by holding down the power button until a menu appears then choosing the "Power off" item? The Vega doesn't have a CMOS battery (that I know of) and relies totally on it main battery to retain the date and time. It sounds like you are completely using up all available battery power which will happen very quickly if you don't completely power it down. Once you have Paul's modified ROM on the Vega you will have full access to the Android market. You will be able to download Kindle for Android and the other apps you mentioned. Note though that in my experience the Skype for Android does not have video calling capability and is audio only. I do not know if anyone has produced a modified version.
