This is what the iFilemanager looks like when my Android phone is connected, in disc drive mode, and the Vega is set to USB slave.

I gather there should be an additional USB icon at the top, so can I assume there's a fault somewhere?

The phone instantly recognises the connection, but no response on the vega

Cheers,

Chris

For starters, you won't find your phone when you're VEGA is in slave mode. You have to be in HOST mode to host another USB device.

Secondly, you can find it in /mnt/system_usb (or something like that, don't have my vega to hand right now). It'll be somewhere in the /mnt directory.

Sorry, I did mean HOST mode.

I can't see it in docking_USB or system_USB, thats about all I can find

It should be in system_USB (if memory serves). If it's an android phone, some are pick over when they mount. I suggest unplugging the phone, switching default behaviour to "Mount as USB drive" (instead of "Charge Only" and then try.

From what I've found, mine will only mount when it goes directly to mount as USB.

Depending upon the size of your phone's SD card, it may take longer to mount.

Thanks for that Zeb, I'll give that a try tomorrow (had enough tonight, LOL)

Have you tried a usb pen drive to check if host mode is working correctly? May also be phone in wrong mode (usb debugging, disk drive, etc)

I did try a pen USB drive originally, but thought i'd try the phone as it has a load of different types of files on, I assumed it would see something!

I will give it another go but I only really want this to work so that I can view pictures from digital cameras whilst out and about so if it can't do that, there's not much point in me persisting with it.

I'll update when I've had another play.

Thanks for the replies,

Chris

You could get a usb sd card reader to plug into the vega ....... they sell on flea bay for about a quid

Thanks guys, I still haven't had time to have another go at this yet, was out mountain biking until late last night!

I do have a card reader, it's not seeing anything on that either.

For that script, do I just click on the link from the Vega or do I download it to the PC and copy it across to the SD?

cheers,

Chris

Are sure the vega is in host mode if it doesn't see a card reader then I would suggest re-installing the apk file again

you download it on your PC, and extract the contents to the gscript folder on your sdcard.

you also need gscript installed on your vega, and you need to import the scripts into gscript.

Right, I've done all that and when I run the script from the Gscript app to mount usb on sdcard, it flashes up an error "No such files or directory" and some other waffle which dissapears too quickly to read.

The Vega is in HOST mode and the connected Android phone set to "mount as disk drive."

What am I doing wrong?

Bit of a long shot but try installing alogcat. alogcat captures the debugging and logging information from logcat, the Android logging service. Run it, then plug in your phone. Check the output for anything meaningful. If it's complete nonsense to you, you can save the output to file and post it.

Guys, I'm in awe of your awesomeness :)

I've had a play, and the SDHC card is now WORKING and I can view it in gallery. Fantastic stuff ;) but still couldn't read the phone.

I ran that alogcat thing, which does spring up a load of information which is meaningless to me. However, I did notice that it did take a little while to scan through everything which made me wonder if I was just being impatient. And I was...

Running the script again, I can also view all the phone files on my Vega ;) (after being a bit more patient for everything to get going.)

Thanks again all for all your help and patience guiding yet another cluesless newb through all this alien stuff :(

Cheers,

Chris :(

Another quick update for the benefit of anyone searching on this:

My Wifes Nikon L110 card works fine through gallery and ifilemanager, once it's been reformatted (FAT32)

My Nikon D90 doesn't work in gallery, but can be viewed through ifilemanager although it's slow to load files.

I'm not entirely sure why, they are both saving images as JPEG although the default file format for the D90 is DCS. I reformatted to FAT32 which the camera seems happy with, and then it's viewable in ifilemanager through a USB card reader (won't read directly from the camera)

regarding the phone:

could you please completely turn off your vega, turn it back on again, plug in your phone in mass storage mode, and check what files are in /dev/block/vold/ ?

Why's that matey? happy to do it if it helps you out but the phone is now working through the Vega. As above, I wasn't giving it enough time to sort itself out

I would just like to add my thanks. I assumed that I could just put a USB stick in at it would just automatically be mounted. However since I have read this I have successfully mounted a couple of USB sticks and a powered 2.5" external hard disk.

The only trouble I am still having is mounting an unpowered external hard disk. It spins intermittently so I assume the USB port is not providing enough power to drive the disk?

it's not necessary if your phone works now.

that folder contains files representing partitions on attached microSD's and usb devices, and when something doesn't mount manually i can see why by the files in that folder.

if you want to try for yourself with some more troublesome usb devices:

usually sdcard is:

179:24 (partition table)

179:25 (partition 1)

usb device 1 is:

8:0 (partition table)

8:1 (partition 1)

8:2 (partition 2)

etc.

and usb device 2 is:

8:16 (partition table)

8:17 (partition 1)

8:18 (partition 2)

etc.

and the command used for manual mounting is:

mount -o rw -t {filesystem} /dev/block/vold/{partitionID} {empty folder}
replacing {text} with the appropriate value. example: mount -o rw -t vfat /dev/block/vold/8:17 /mnt/usb/docking_usb which is for a 2nd usb stick on a usb hub. filesystem can be: ext2 (may require changing folder permissions) ext3 (may not work on some roms) ext4 (may not work on some roms) vfat (FAT16/32) (others work, but aren't used for usb storage)
umount {folder}

to unmount the partition(use before removing usb device)

example: umount /mnt/usb/docking_usb

the commands can be used in terminal emulator apps, or in gscript.

Thanks for that, I'm actually starting to understand this stuff :(

I shall have a play and see how it goes
