Newly purchased Orange San Francisco... advice needed

Hi, I have recently bought an Orange San Francisco and I'm finding all the information a bit confusing. Obviously I want to root/clockwork/install custom rom etc. I have come across methods of rooting and clockworking it WITHOUT connecting to a PC (not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here)... is it safe to do it this way? As many of the guides on this forum state that you should connect it to the PC to perform those procedures

Also, would the jellyfish rls9 ROM be a good place to start? Or would you recommend a different one?

thanks

I've just done the one I bought on Monday using:

Universal AndRoot (Here)on the phone to root it,

followed by a download of Recovery Manager(Here)

Put the Modaco ROM (Here) and the latest Clockwork (Here) image from Modaco onto the SDCARD, then flashed clockwork from recovery manager, rebooted into clockwork (hold Vol Down when booting) and flashing the Modaco ROM from there.

No guarantees, but it worked fine for me :(

^ as above.

However, you could go down a slightly different path:

Download the ROM of your choice. I would pick FLB v10b, its very stable & has good battery life. Plus it 2.2 Android

Copy it to the root of your phone SD card

Install Universal Androot from the market

Once you have Universal Androot installed you can install 'ROM Manger'' You can use this to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery directly on to the phone. (Clockwork is built in so no need for an extra file)

Once you have installed Clockwork I would boot into it. (either from ROM Manager or boot phone with - Vol held down)

Backup your current ROM (choose backup)

Wipe Data

Wipe Cache

Install your ROM file from the options in Clockwork. (install zip file from SD card option)

Hope this helps

The only reason I didn't follow that is that the links are to slightly older versions of some of the software and I like cutting edge untested - might wreck the phone, flying by the seat of your pants kinda software.... but thats just me. :(

If you like that kind of stuff (like me :)) just follow the instructions but then flash the latest CM7 Nightlys :(

I downloaded root/recovery/clockwork files directly to phone, downloaded rom to PC then copy the rom file to the phone SD card through card reader, then put the card back to phone and do all the root/clockwork/rom install all from SD card, without having to connect phone to PC.

Worked perfectly.

Who needs CM7 when we've got an Alpha of Honeycomb!? :(

thanks. Can I not just follow this guide

http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk/

and then use the modaco rom?

Newbie to newbie, I followed the orangesanfrancisco.co.uk guide, installed JJ9 rom and never looked back, love the phone, it's everything my Nokia X6 wasn't. Go for it and enjoy.

Cheers!

perfectly safe to do it that way, whilst I did my phone bought in october using fastboot etc my sister got one the other week and I rooted/modded it for her using the method you are enquiring about and put in JJrls 9 for her, no problems whatsoever.

just check the md5s and you have no worries.

Thanks for the help. Just to clarify, can I follow the procedure on http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk but use the modaco ROM instead of the jellyfish?

Also, is this the modaco ROM: http://loadbalancing.modaco.com/download.p...en-unsigned.zip ...? (if not, what is this exactly?)

or do I need to be a premium member to download the modaco ROM?

thanks again

EDIT: Also, is this unlocker safe to use? http://arrtoo.x10.mx/unlockBlade.php

Yes, you can use the same procedure to install the modaco ROM.

Yes, the link you supplied is correct and you don't have to be a premium member.

I used the unlocker, AFAIK it's safe.

FWIW, yesterday (5th March) I bought one of the new B10 firmware models from Argos.

The Arrtoo unlock worked fine. So Orange have done nothing to stop unlocking.

The guide http://orangesanfrancisco.co.uk worked fine, all the details there are up to date.

I installed flibblesan's FLB-Froyo G2 r10b, and that worked as well, and boy is it a big improvement over the stock firmware from Orange!

Hi guys, newbie here, haven't purchased my San Fran yet as I'm scared about not getting a G2 Model.

The Orangesanfrancisco.co.uk website says "- If you have a G1, you are safe to continue with this guide.

- If you have a G2, STOP or you will brick your phone. ROMs and tools will be available later for the G2, so check back soon. Until then, you should not try to root, install custom ROMs or flash ClockworkMod Recovery."

How did you install a new rom onto the G2 device?

Thanks In Advance!
