In the Gmail settings, last thing on the list is:

Notify once

Notify once for new email, not every new message

If you untick it the phone will beep for every new email even if you have unread ones already.

With the SMS messages the phone only seems to beep on arrival of the first message and if you don't notice (or ignore it) then it doesn't beep again if another new SMS arrives. Is there a way to enable notification on every new SMS in the standard messaging app - i'd rather not install a fancy messaging app as this is the only extra I would like, I have no interest in thousands of emoticons or customisable speech bubble type conversation layouts etc.

That's a bit odd - never came across this before and wouldn't even be able to advise you how to only have SMS's alert you for the first one (unless installing a third-party app!). Which ROM are you on?

2.2 de crossed cheque, with the new mms.apk added from the thread about needing to spoof the iphone user agent for larger mms size on giffgaff.

I,m only getting a beep on the first text and if i don't read it then thephone doesn't beepfor any more new ones that come.

download and install easy reminder or flashlight from appbrain or android market then conigure it as you want. i had lots of times missed calls and sms cause i dont hear or dont have time to check the phone often. i use easy reminder, it has more options.
