Several weeks ago i noticed that several of my movie (trailers/music/films) files that i created and uploaded to my phone disappeared. I wasn't sure what had caused it but as no other files on the SD card were gone and no apps that use it had failed i just put it down to either an error i made or somebody else had done with them playing on my phone.

Today i decided to upload a few more of them and i have a directory on my phone "Toytown" where i keep all my media so

/toytown/music

/toytown/pictures

/toytown/movies etc etc

I decided to make a new directory called /toytown/.movies so that it would be hidden except by using the filler and unticking "hide dot files" and started to upload the mp4s again, after i did about 8 i decided to go back and check that they were there and all started/seeked ok. Everything seemed ok, left my phone for a few hours and then checked again, everything was fine......i then went to the videos and gallery app too see if they were listed (there are not because of the . directory). I then went back to the directory where they were located on my SD card and 5 of the 8 mp4s are gone.......putting the SD card into my computer i also cannot see them and the space they occupied has been reclaimed, so it looks like they have been deleted.

Any ideas what causes this? Some MP4's that i uploaded in the first month are still on the card today, so it isnt getting rid of all of them. Stock Orange rom if it helps.

Try looking in the 'lost directory'.

When you look at your sdcard, it should be the folder saying 'Lost dir' (I think).

I heard somewhere that all misplaced files go there...?

May help, hope it does :(

Nope it wipes them from the card, i checked the lost directory the first time but the space gets reclaimed so it definetely deletes them. It appears its a pretty serious bug when using either hidden directorys or using .nomedia files. I used these in the past so that the gallery wouldnt scan all my directories and take forever to respond, or so that pictures i didnt care about (apps icons and stuff) didnt show up in the gallery.

The issue is mentioned here

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=3692

Its quite easy to replicate as well, i copied 2GB of mp4s back to a directory with a .nomedia file in yesterday and as soon as i went to gallery, it wiped all the new files i had just copied.

I had a similar issue and it was down to a dodgy SD card, replaced it and had no more issues?
