Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Having just had a load of problems when trying to stupidly flash a new rom where I dsont have access to a usb > usb cable (and thus unable to us the NVflash to recover) I was reflecting on how irritating it is that the Vega doesn't have a key shortcut to get into CWM when booting. I dont really understand all that much about the mechanics of how the stuff works but I was wondering is this something that is fixable? Will some enterprising dev be able to change somethng in the kernel so that holding volume down or up when booting gets us to CWM? Or is this something hard wired into the basic hardware of the Vega meaning this will never be possible? Any ideas?
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Also I seem to distantly recall that AdamG started some development on this that didn't quite work. But for the life of me cannot find the thread.... Perhaps it is on XDA... Does anyone know what I am witteringf on about here :( or is this just something I dreamt!

To do this, you need access to the source code for the boot loader and that hasn't been released. The boot loader is not part of the kernel. We either wait until it is, or someone figures out how to take someone elses bootloader and hack it for the Vega. Not a trivial thing to do.
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Aha so this is "big stuff" then.... I guess any dev's interested in the Vega, with the skill and stuff to sort this will probably be most focussed on a honeycomb ROM i'd guess. And obviously that is going to be more important than this. Hope someone does work it out though as for my 2Cents it would be well handy.
Guest simonta Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Yeh, I miss it too. PS, just got to say, your profile pic makes me smile everytime I see it...

Yeah, there was a post here but it seems to have been deleted. Shame AdamG decided to 'hit and run' by promising so much then delivering so little :) I'm sure it's possible and it is something I would like to see too, maybe Paul could have a crack at it :(
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Ha ha! Glad to hear it, was a damn good night and destined to be a profile pix the minute I saw the photo!

Hopefully though down the line his start may help someone else on that.

It's just unfortunate that we lost another good dev for our Vega's.
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Indeed, though clearly the Vega is one of those devices where either the screen isnt an issue or it really is. Horses for courses. Will be interesting to see what effect the iPad2 and the 3.0 tabs being released have on our Vega scene. Mind you I really hope Paul will be tempted to have a butchers at Honeycomb, and I know Apache/Bumble who is working on the CM7 rom for Vega has stated he fancies a crack. There are a fair few other ROMs coming out so there is a bit of a critical mass around.
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Aha knew that thread was around here somewhere... http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-v...oting-recovery/
Guest simonta Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Just saw this (recent) response from an NVidia support engineer on the Tegra forums... I'm not certain that we provide any public details on the bootloader at this time -- my best recollection is that it is provided to our BSP level partners/customers only. If you are working with us on a product, your customer engineering contacts should be able to point you in the right direction.
Guest rferrett Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 Interesting. Might be worth asking the @adventvega twitter account about it then? But I guess it depends also on there being a Vega dev who has the skill and inclination to look into it assuming we got the bootloader info. Mind you Bumble/Apache has been working on bits and bobs around this and AdamG says in the opening post of that thread that it was bumble's idea so I might PM him and see what he thinks.

Guest rferrett Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 I tweeted bumbledroid about this :- http://twitter.com/#!/BumbleDroid/stat...788105563639808 So I think it is something he might look at in future. Though I suspect that, quite rightly, it isn't going to be a top priotity.
