Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) Hi All, I've got a seriously unhappy HTC Desire. It's been randomly rebooting for a couple of months now, originally I assume this was because I'd messed up an update to 2.2 but it seems after my efforts this morning that It might actually be a hardware issue :(. I've gone ahead and wiped the phone and flashed the latest modaco custom rom with sense (r9) and it has succesfully booted, but no, halfway through the HTC welcome wizard thing, bam, reboot, operator logo (o2) and then stuck in a loop at the logo until I pull the battery. Usually I now have to wait 20/30 minutes before replacing the battery and hoping that the damn thing boots. edit: Replaced the battery, got it to boot and complete the HTC wizard, then it died while checking out wavesecure. Stuck in the boot loop again. I'm more and more convinced its hardware, but would love some second opinions. Anyone got any thoughts on what to do or do I need to figure out how to get in touch with HTC for a replacement? KR. UDP. Edited March 5, 2011 by undisclosedpower
Guest kubia Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 have you tried this: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...d-b0rked-fixed/ ?
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) have you tried this: http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-desi...d-b0rked-fixed/ ? Hi Kubia, Not sure how that would help since the phone is functioning perfectly fine, apart from the random reboots. Would you still suggest that I try this? Thanks. UDP. Guest bpivk Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 apart from the random reboots. Is the phone hot to the touch? If yes then the phone is faulty.
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 No thats the baffling thing the device is not at all hot. UDP.

Guest bpivk Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Did you debrand the phone since you're on O2? I don't have any experience with debranding but I do know that you need to debrand the phone first and then install a custom rom.

However I doubt that it could be the cause since the random crashes were occurring under the stock 2.1 ROM that the phone was shipped with. @kubia, guess i'll give it a go then.
Guest bpivk Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 the random crashes were occurring under the stock 2.1 ROM that the phone was shipped with. I forgot about your previous problems. As I've said I don't have experience with branded phones so I can't be sure that that's your problem. You could run "adb logcat" from command console and check where the problem occurs.

I've actually got an adb logcat of the latest crash. But I cant see anything useful in it. Is there a preferred sit here for pasting those?

Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Ok, Heres the last 100 lines. I really can't see anything that would upset it. But maybe you guys will know more! Guest tatey2457 Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Did you debrand the phone since you're on O2? I don't have any experience with debranding but I do know that you need to debrand the phone first and then install a custom rom. You can flash whichever rom you like as long as your phone is rooted...de-branding has nothing to do with it.
Guest bpivk Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) You can flash whichever rom you like as long as your phone is rooted...de-branding has nothing to do with it. I didn't know that. Thanks for the clarification. I guess it's needed only to restore the correct RUU then. Edited March 5, 2011 by bpivk
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Would a dodgy SD card be a reason for my phone to keep crashing? Several times since upgrading to 2.2 its been remounted as read only which I can only assume means its having some sort of trouble. Thoughts? Thanks. UDP>
Guest bpivk Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 (edited) Would a dodgy SD card be a reason for my phone to keep crashing? Several times since upgrading to 2.2 its been remounted as read only which I can only assume means its having some sort of trouble. Thoughts? I had this problem twice: The first time was when I've forced some apps to sd. My card was constantly mounting as read only which caused a lot of problems. The second time was when I've partitioned my card incorrectly. I've left some unpartitioned space on the card which caused problems. That could cause problems if you're using a2sd or some similar script but probably not on a stock rom because it doesn't use that script. Edited March 6, 2011 by bpivk
Guest Jamsi Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 My Desire started having problems when I flashed a new kernel on it. Randomly it got totally stuck when I left in on the charger for a longer period. The only solution was to take off the battery. I solved the problem by flashing a new kernel. So, it seems that some kernels might cause problems on some Desires/ROMs.
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 @bpivk, I've gone ahead and ordered a new sd card just in case. Worst comes to the worst i've got a spare sd care for future use! I'm just trying to stave off dealing with sending the phone back to HTC I suppose. @Jamsi, I've never looked in to kernels, but I assume the one supplied with the 2.2 MCR must be different from the stock 2.1 kernel that I was using before and had similar issues with. Maybe i'm wrong? @all Thanks for all your help and replies so far!
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Well, a brand new SD card and an upgrade to the latest Froyo MCR has still not made my desire stable :( Does anyone know if, since I got the phone from o2 and i'm still in contract with them, I contact o2 for organizing a replacement or do I need to get in touch with HTC? I got the phone about 9 months ago if it matters. I'm assuming before I send it off anywhere i'll need to flash back to stock. Can anyone confirm that?
Guest bpivk Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 I'm assuming before I send it off anywhere i'll need to flash back to stock. Can anyone confirm that?Yes. You need to flash the original rom.
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Is the best way to go back to stock with the RUU?
Guest EddyOS Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Is the best way to go back to stock with the RUU? It's the only way to go back to stock. Do you know the ROM that was originally on your phone?
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 It's the only way to go back to stock. Do you know the ROM that was originally on your phone? Came with 2.1 from O2. So I imagine I can use an o2 2.2 RRU from one of the other threads?
Guest EddyOS Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Yep, here's the RUU link I uploaded: http://www.multiupload.com/7YMY6RLCKY Should work for you. If not let me know as there's more we can try but it would involve a gold card so you might wanna make one if you get a chance
Guest undisclosedpower Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 Hi EddyOS, that RRU worked perfectly and my phone is now stock. Thank you so much! Sadly, the damn thing is still crashing randomly, so I will be on the phone with o2 shortly exploring my option :(
