Ok so we have seen ubuntu running on the vega, and no doubt those smart guys will perfect!! But what about windows, would a version of that run on the vega?

Nope. Wrong architecture. Windows 8 might run, as it will be released for ARM, but drivers might be a problem and Vegas will be pretty much obsolete by later 2012.

Also, apart from for curiosity value when the heck fire would anyone want W7 on their Vega? I mean I know it is oestensibly for touch screen devices. But every review of any W7 tablet I have read have universally panned W7 as an operating system for this kind of device.

I am not a knee jerk Windows hater (I reserve all my fanboi bile for Apple <spit>) and I actually think W7 is a great desktop OS, by a country mile the best Microsoft have produced. But it just won't cut it for me on a tablet.

Mind you I would find it fascinating if someone got it working!

Agreed on W7 on the desktop. Got an iMac that spends 10% of it's time running OSX (for iTunes (double spit) only) and the rest running W7.

W8 could be a very different proposition though with all the experience MS will gain from WP7 and Zune. If you've ever played with Surface, it knocks any current OS into a cocked hat for touchability and although only R&D, will probably, cough cough, "surface" in W8.

Aha that does seem pretty interesting. I vaguely remember listening to the Gaurdian Tech Weekly when they talked about this back along but had not given it much thought.

I wonder with the explosion of tablet computing, W8 being ARM compatible and Surface what sort of thing Microsoft will come up with. Given the increasing dominance of Apple I am half rooting for Microsoft these days... having nearly, but not quite, forgiven them for IE6 and Bisto!!!
