Strange Bird sounds when calling?

I have never come across this before but here goes.

A work colleague has an HTC Desire and a couple of days ago it developed this problem.

Whenever anyone rings him the caller,instead of hearing ring,ring etc in their eapeice they hear the sound of birds.

I am no expert but it sounds like seagulls.It is driving all the people that call him mad.

Can ayone shed any light on what may be happening?
