Guest kaostheory Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Evening All, I am an avid fan of modaco and android. I have a Pulse and a Blade both with MCR installed. I spend way too much time on the train back and fro to London from the south coast and want something to increase productivity and also something to watch a film on now and again. Uses 720/1080 Video ( How is codec support? ) Music Web Browsing Skype Facebook Editing documents Development ( Bash, Python, Java ) SSH E-mail RDP/VNC ----------------------------------------------- Does the tablet support USB Host mode? I understand there will be a bias here but for the money and reasonable amounts either side, should I be getting this and MCR'ing it or looking at other options. If so, which ones? Thanks in advance Rhys
Guest Fuzzysteve Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Music : Standard android music support. Web Browsing: Good. nice and responsive. Though there's not 3g support. You'd need a dongle (see the appropriate topic for what people have been doing, or get a mifi) Unless your train has wifi, that is Skype: Never used the skype app. Don't see why not though Facebook: Official android app do you? Editing docs: You'd need an app for that. But there are plenty out there. Development: Not a clue SSH: Connectbot. So pretty good. you'd want an external keyboard though. E-Mail: Standard android. K9 is available. Don't know about other exchange support. The tablet supports usb host mode. At least, it does when you use the custom rom available here. Updating to it is easy. (as long as you make sure to use the right usb driver. helps if you have an xp box to do it with, so it doesn't automatically find the right one.) For remote connections, bear in mind that android, in general, doesn't support plain ipsec vpns yet. Needs a kernel module installed to work, and the Vega doesn't have it. IPSEC/L2TP works.
Guest yabbas Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 720/1080 Video ( How is codec support? ) - Codec support is good. Audio is the main issue I've found with a few videos. Music - Great, too many media players to list. Web Browsing - Great, flash runs superb. Skype - Great, but your mobile carrier will probably block the ports. Facebook - Great. Editing documents - Hmmm...this is where my experience differs. Touchscreens are good for short texts and emails. Longer docs are too much imho. Bluetooth keyboard works a treat. Development ( Bash, Python, Java ) - Ditto the above. I wouldn't do a LOT of serious work on these. SSH- Great E-mail - Great RDP/VNC - Great Does the tablet support USB Host mode? - USB Host is available from the docking station out of the box. But the USB port on the side of the Vega is Slave only. USB Mode Switcher here in Modaco can repurpose the USB port, but requires a restart to do so. It's also Kernel specific. I'd say get Vega, and stick Fuji's Rom on it.
Guest stevesilk51 Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 Agree with yabbas but particularly fond of watching movies on it. I use DVDfab8 to convert into Ipad (excuse the ref) format and away I go. Straight from USB in host mode
Guest Dyonas Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 One thing I'd add given you mention development and editing documents is that the screen quite often repeats key presses. It's annoying more than inhibiting but for long coding and text entry you'd be getting frustrated by it a lot. Just typing this out I've had it happen four times. I've noticed it happens a lot more while charging.

I've noticed it happens a lot more while charging. That's a common problem, especially when charging. You may want to try installing different keyboards (remember to activate them with a long press in a text dialogue/input box) or install and use the Screen Calibration app that has worked for some : Link http://android.modaco.com/content/advent-v...-works-on-vega/ Edited March 9, 2011 by stevesilk51
Guest dopeh Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 SSH: Connectbot. So pretty good. you'd want an external keyboard though. Have you been able to get the tab key working on an external keyboard by any chance? That's the only thing I couldn't figure out.. Cheers
Guest kaostheory Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 OK, I'm sold. I just ordered one and a dock. Now just need to decide on the "essential" app list for me. What is the battery life like? Also.. probably something no-one has tried yet but can you tether with this using easytether or the like? ( wired ). Can anyone recommend a bluetooth keyboard and also a good text editor, preferally like Gedit with markup for common languages? Thanks for the advice guys much appreciated. I think the turning point was when i saw a thread with someone running Ubuntu :( Rhys
