Guest nathanunist Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 I have checked out all I can about USB host/slave modes and there seems to be conflicting info (or I'm just not reading it right :( ). Some posts have been saying that there is no power connection out of the USB port. Others have been saying they are getting devices (HID, mass storage, etc.), which obviously require power, to work. Are they all using a powered hub as I have seen on YouTube? I'm pretty sure I know what will happen if I hook it up to my computer in slave mode, but can I just plug in a keyboard in host mode and it will work?
Guest stevesilk51 Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 I'm afraid it's a case of trial and error. I'm sure you have read the thread on which devices have been found to work in USB host. Many keyboards are OK. The smaller notebook mice tend to go well IMO. USB sticks generally OK. External drives get a mixed success rate so if you are intending to buy one search the thread for one known to be OK. I think there is power out of the USB port in host mode but may not be the 4.5v generally found on a PC. Regards Steve
Guest nathanunist Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Thanks Steve. I'm more interested in the port itself as opposed to the devices, though. Just thinking that if the port in host mode is to USB host standard (V+ = 5V ~100mA, gnd, D+, and D-) that in theory anything could be connected given the right driver.
Guest yabbas Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 When switching to host, there is power output on the port. I use it to charge my Galaxy S :( When in slave, nothing is there (obviously.) It'd be so nice if we could switch the port status at runtime ... :(
Guest nathanunist Posted March 10, 2011 Report Posted March 10, 2011 Sweet! Exactly what I wanted to hear, yabbas :( With your Galaxy S, do you get data connectivity as well or just power?
