Morning.

Recently bought 2 more Vegas as gifts. Setup the first one with all the usual Modaco forum goodness with ease. Doing the second one and hit a problem - and I'm the one always banging on about "just follow the guides", "it's easy", "wish I could figure out where the noobs struggle" then wham bam thank you maam and I've got a problem!

Windows 7. Brand new Vega so already has 1.09. PC has been used to build my own Vega (many times :() and also the first of these 2 I'm building so it already has the recovery and ADB drivers installed. Could not for the life of me get the ADB drivers running on this second Vega. I could load them OK but the device wouldn't start. So I flashed with 1.09 to make sure I had a completely vanilla starting point but still no good. I know that the USB port is OK because I just flashed it.

I've removed all traces of drivers with USBDview and reinstalled several times. Still get the device can't start error in the ADB driver. Plug in one of the other Vegas and ADB starts just fine.

And yes, I DO have USB debugging turned on :(

Any clues? Understanding this problem might be a big help in the regulars' quest to help noobs. Why on earth would ADB, which is software only, work on 2 Vegas but not a 3rd?

Cheers

Hi Simonta,

Now this doesn't really solve your problem, but, is it worth trying ADBremote i.e. running adb wirlessly? Has helped me out before

Cheers

Just a few possibilities to check out :-

  • Are you using the same USB cable as used on other Vega builds?
  • Could the new one have got into Host mode somehow?
  • When connected what does device manager indicate (if anything)?
  • Cough debugging is running :( ?
  • How charged is the battery on the new device perhaps it needs a top-up before using ADB with power supply in?

Any progress Simon? :(

Hi Trevor

Had to go shopping :(

1. Cable is the same

2. Not in host mode - checked with my own app I wrote a while back - and just to make sure, I manually flashed the slave mode kernel from mcr7.

3. Device manager shows USB Mass Storage by default. Uninstalled it and replaced with the ADB drivers. Works with the other 2 Vegas fine.

4. Cough cough, of course USB debugging is turned on - unless it's a software fault but I've reflashed so can't see how? Got the "are you sure" caution and the ladybird in the notification bar.

5. Battery is 100% - been on charge overnight.

Beginning to think this might be a compact and bijou hardware problemette although odd that NVFlash works OK. I'm working around it with ADB wireless at the moment. Think my next step will be to pop into host mode and try a few peripherals.

Cheers

I knew it was strange!

Trevor, you gave me a hint I hadn't tried, unmount the SD Card. Guess what? Nothing in Windows. Toddled off to PC World and swapped it and all is well. As the cousins say, go figure!

Cheers

Glad you got it fixed. When you say 'nothing in Windows' did you have to swap the whole device or just the SD card and is there supposed to be something in the SD card when it is delivered new? Can't say I ever checked mine when I first got it.

Swapped the whole thing. With USB debugging off, when you unmount the SD Card, it should mount as a USB Mass Storage device in Windows (and appears as a removable drive). It didn't. With the ADB device "can't start" error, it all points to a problem with the USB port but why flashing would work but not ADB or USB storage, who knows?

The only thing installed on a fresh SD Card is the Advent file sync software, which is actually very good for noobs. Drag and drop file sync from a system tray app.

OK understood thanks for the info and hope you get the new one up and running soon if it isn't already. :D

Ah, you know me :D

Already modded, hacked to the max and handed to daughter for her birthday. iPlayer, 3G dongled, Wobbly Doggys' leaked Flash (good timing), the works.

Big smiles - thanks to this forum and the mcr.
