ipad2 vs tegra

Hi all Anandtech have done some benchmarking of the Ipad2 and XOOM here - http://www.anandtech.com/show/4216/apple-i...mp2-benchmarked

From thier tests the powerVR sgx543mp2 in the Ipad outstrips the tegra in all the tests.

Im just wondering if anyone has any such benchmarking done after Pauls worked his magic ?

NB i dont own a VEGA as yet due to loss of the cash when my eldest broke the windscreen on the car :D

Thanks

Matt

When they compare oranges with apples then of course there is going to be a difference.

You did note the screen resolution differences yes? I can do a similar benchmark on my PC if you want, I will just use my old TNT2 graphics card at 640x480 (with AA and AF off etc) and then my 9800 GX2 at it's maximum resolution with every option turned on and OMG my TNT2 is better than my £600 (at the time of purchase) graphics card by 2fps.

May as well have compared the Ipad 2 to a sofa for all that that test is worth.

@Bobbler

Yes yes I get the whole screen resolution thing and anyway the resolution on the VEGA is less that that of the ipad, also the tnt vs whatever comparison is not the same as these two tablets are running chipsets from the same'ish generation not years apart.

@trevor432990

If I am reading it correctly that thread is ipad not ipad2 related though is interesting.

Anyway im not trolling all I asked is if anyone had run any comparable tests on the VEGA after Paul had worked his magic as im interested on a counter point to this investigation run by a well know and generally reputable site .

Thanks

I'm swaying between the ipad2 and the Asus tranformer at the mo..can't decide. So used to android now ( little Archos 70) I know..sad! :unsure: tho I do love my ipod touch, which helped to finally shrug off my Apple phobia :)

Its unfair to compare the vega to tablets like the ipad2 or transsformer as it costs half the price. Transformer is better than the ipad2 imho, higher res screen, same ips quality, abrowser with flash, expandable storage etc. My opinion is that the vega is the best value for money wise on a tablet, but that doesnt make it the best tablet available, for that is the transformer.

Looking at the Asus transformer V Ipad2 , I`m thinking of getting a transformer when it hits my price point probably in the January sales next year ( £350 max )

Can't really accurately test them at least in the way they are doing. It also doesn't mean a lot in real terms. For example in a real application that is power hungry we see that comparing an ipad2 to a Tegra chipset is just plain silly because the ipad isn't even capable of the same operations.

Its like comparing a land rover to a sports coupe even if the landy had more BHP the other car would be faster on the road but take them off road we know which one is faster. When it comes to CPUs its even more different as CPUs will outperform each other in different areas depending on how they are designed and we are talking comparing two very different chips. Tegra is also an integrated GPU design so the CPU has a much broader repertoire in a tegra chip but that can mean that the two have difference performance profiles.

Also the site may be reputable but the guys that write a tablet review and one on your latest graphics cards are going to be different. Also in order to accurately test the two they would need to be run on the same operating system with the same software. It doesn't look like they did that.

The Asus Transformer is fantastic. Many Vega owners have moved up to it. But, like you stated, it's almost twice the price. If I was offered the Transformer, iPad and Vega, I would choose the Transformer then iPad then Vega. But for 200, the Vega is a great introduction to tablets. The Transformer will become a sensation when it retails at 250 at Xmas. I think anyone coming from an "open" environment, such as PC or Android, would find the Apple closed-shop suffocating.

The Vega as demonstrated one thing, I love the form factor.

Spot on with that, can`t agree more !!!!

Not sure if it will end up been the transformer in the end, only time will tell.

So far there is :- Acer Iconia tab A500 , Motorola XOOM , Asus transformer .

Let the battle begin !!!!

i know but the xoom is heavier, £100 more, worse screen, reportably more sluggish, than the transformer, and the acer one doesnt have as good a screen.

so in my opinion the transformer is the best, its tough rated the ipad as its a good device, fast, big appstore, alot of love and support with accessories, but i just cant justify not having flash on the browser, fine there might be an arguement for it not on a phone, even on the original ipad with its 1ghz processor you could say flash might not play too nicely with it, but with a dual core on a 10inch device, flash is very much so required. plus not having expandable storage, no hdmi port etc etc, just makes it not worth the money.

What I was trying to say is that the transformer is the best 10 inch HC for now.

Who can say if a new tablet will hit the market any day now ?

Which will be :- Faster , cheaper , and all-round better !!!!

Just think what’s happened in just the last couple of months.

You are right about the Xoom unless something spectacular happens soon, it will go the same way as the dinosaurs.
