Hi

As a complete beginer I am worried that if I try to use the latest roms and I mess up my vega will become a brick. Do any of the great experts on here sell sd cards with these roms loaded on them so us novices can just slip them into our pads without any risk envolved.

Best regards Brian

firstly, you can't brick a vega, at least there is no known way yet.

secondly roms are not installed to the sd card so we cannot supply you with an sd you can just "load up".

Don't worry, the general consensus seems to be that the Vega is unbrickable since you can always boot it into recovery mode and reflash from there. Unfortunately having a ROM on your sd card wouldn't help much because ROMs need to be flashed onto the device's internal memory (that's why it's called a ROM, Read Only Memory).

Here is how you reflash from recovery mode when something goes wrong :D

I am no expert and faced the same predicament as you when I first got my Vega as it all seemed rather daunting. The thing to remember is you cannot brick the Vega and no-one has so far done so. I would advise you to read the instructions for doing the ROM update and then take a deep breath and do it. The trickiest part can be getting the USB drivers sorted out but that normally isn't an issue the first time around.

So give it a go and if you get stuck come back here and we will sort you out :D

Flashing the roms inevitably involves "rooting" your vega . This does not use or affect the SD card.

I have yet to come across a totalled (bricked) Vega, they are really bomb proof, and working through the many threads on how to upgrade your vega, which I assure you it does wonderfully, is the way to go.

You will get lots of help here on this great forum. Take the steps slowly and you will get there and in a few weeks you'll become quite competent and unafraid.

The hardest part is getting your PC to recognise the Vega through USB. There are some excellent guides on how to do this.

Now, if you first go through the USB recognition process (which doesn't involve flashing roms and such like) and get that working OK the rest is a breeze. ADB commands are written out for you in the rom guides.

You will need to subscribe to Modaco to "bake" the rom if using Paul's excellent version

Its very nice to know that I cannot 'brick'my vega as to date I am very pleased with it. I bought it from a nice lady on ebay who although she loved it, sold it because she was short of cash. Luckily for me she had already put the rom that enables the market onto the tablet before I bought it. The main problem i seem to have at the moment is that when I put a memory stick into the usb port the tablet does not seem to recognise it. I have seen on here that rom 8 may solve this problem and also give me other usefull features so is this the one I should try to install.

I have only been using android for three weeks and in that time I have flashed a ZTE Blade and installed r8 rom on the Vega. I am not very technical so it must be easy to do (if I can do it).

The Vega was really easy. Just read the guide. I found the most difficult thing was installing the correct USB driver in Windows. Once that was done all you have to do is connect the Vega to a PC via a usb cable, double click on a file and then just leave the Vega alone for a while. It is well worth doing, a device with r8 is a hundred times better than a Vega fresh out of the box.

Hi thanks for your help, I have connected my vega to my laptop using the usb port and used this to put media directly onto the sd card in myh vega. Its great to know I am unlikely to 'brick' my vega as I am already getting very attatched to it. I will take your advice and try one of the updates provided on here.

Brian,

The vega comes with the usb in slave mode and needs switching to host mode, which requires modding your vega, guides available.

Steve

Can you go to SETTINGS > ABOUT DEVICE and tell us what it says in the Model Number, and Kernel Version fields are as that will give us a better idea of where you are at currently?

Which steps are you following? Does it say APK drivers? Or do you mean ADB? If ADB, you download them with the mcr.

What step were you on and what message are you getting exactly? :D

Try extracting the zip file in the usb drivers folder that came with the rom. Then point the driver install at that. (or use device manager to install the drivers, if it doesn't prompt you again)

Hi,

Just had this vega for a day or two. Managed to flash/mod etc, following a few helpful posts on these forums.

Generally,

1) do the button power combo - get into recovery mode

2) windows will try install drivers - either prompts or fails -> manually point to advent vega official usb drivers

3) restart device - but this time in usb debugging mode (from vega apps settings)

4) hopefully windows will find android debugging bridge -> device manager / usb. Then just update with pauls driver in his download zip

5) Optional - install Clockwork Mod recovery thingy ( all these funky names) . Simple really cut and paste instructions from guide.

This is useful allows a much simpler way to update device - without restorting to power combo moves! Also, allows for actual whole backups. There is also a way to recover from these backups using the official flash tool from advent.

6) install pauls custom rom

Thats it really - as my first time with android devices. It is more the new terminology that is actually confusing rather than actual updating process.

Hope this helps as a basic summary that worked for me.
