I've tried the full and the lite version and both give the same result, a box comes up where the widget should be but it just says "problem loading widget". - very odd! Cheers

You didn't force it to the SD card somehow (e.g. via Link2SD)? Anything with widgets you should keep in internal memory to avoid problems.
