Guest Lister Of Smeg Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Hi All, I know this is a known fault, and been discussed. But tried searching and cant find anything specific or quick solution... Whats the easiest way to manage the contacts, remove whats there and re-import them again....?? I have on SD Card a file, containing 131x contacts, and on my phone in Contacts part of Phone App, I have 312x contacts, mainly dupes, but some with slight spelling changes due to FB sync...?? Cheers, Lister
Guest travellerscross Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 (edited) I had this problem myself... No matter when I was removing contacts and adding them again, the contact list numbers increased to the point I had over 500 contacts. The easiest way first is to get Contact Analyzer (version 2 is memory serves me correct ) and Contact Remover. download both of these from the Market. With contact Analyzer - Use it and prese on menu, and merge the current contacts all into one. Then check duplicates also. This will clean up your contact list. At this point go into the menu again and click on information and all should be okay and the correct amount. Get out of that prog and go into contacts and export your current cleaned up list to SD card Go into Contact remover and delete all contacts... When done Go into Contacts and Import from SD card. That should do the trick of cleaning up all your messed up contacts. Edited March 16, 2011 by travellerscross
Guest Lew247 Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 NO need for all that... Simply sign into google on a computer Click Settings/Google account Settings then click Dashboard (View data stored with this account) Click Contacts Then find duplicates Then delete the ones you dont want Most people make the mistake of every time they update or put a new rom on - they then copy their contacts from the SD card or bluetooth again There is no need as Google sync will download them automatically for you a few moments after you sign into Google after you flash the new rom
Guest travellerscross Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Lew is right that Google Synch can cause problems with duplicates. However I must add I still had duplicates after sorting out synch and googles pain in the butt of a contact list. With it turned off etc etc, I still had duplicates and hidden duplicates on the phone. Did a post on this sometime back. It was when I used the apps in above post I sorted finally sorted the duplicates and got the phone working to how it should be contacts wise. Duplication isn't always caused by google and it's synching sadly. That is what I have found from my experience.
Guest Lister Of Smeg Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Hi Lew247 and travellerscross, You guys are legends, thanks for such a quick response..... and that all makes sense now. As I have flipped between roms a bit now (within the two weeks of having this device) but always opt'd out of the Google Sync, cept for one night I thought what the Heck, must be a good thing surely...?? ;-) I imported my Contacts original though a Windows app called "MyPhoneExplorer" or summit like that, from a Sony K800i to SanFran, and then save to a .VCF file, and this always worked fine importing back in. But on the last couple of CM7 Roms, I found like 300x contacts??? And wow, never knew that info was stored in such a neat way in Google. Will edit those when I get home... ** Guys, thank you soo much for your quick, and informative response.... perfect!!! ** Cheers, Lister
Guest sambartle Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 A quicker way (easier to remember) to get to your google contacts is: contacts.google.com But Lew247 is right that's the quickest way of solving problems. Google Sync doesn't cause any problems in my experience if you stick to using this official channel to add, edit and merge contacts.

I have a similar query: I have friends but with different contact details i.e. Lattitude, Facebook and phone etc, is their an app i can merge them into one contact, rather than manually doing this?

Latitude will already be merged by Google.. but if they are not they will be in your Google contacts if you go to the Google contacts site linked above, and you can merged them as shown in the reply by Lew247. The best way to merge facebook I found was to just use the official facebook app.. and set it to sync with existing contacts.. that way it doesn't sync all the people on fb who don't have phone numbers etc.. and so are pointless having on your phone.. but does merge the rest.. (which you can then tidy up with the website). The old HTC Sense facebook/contacts apps are the best though as you can link people who are not in any way similar if they have picked stupid names on facebook for example.. Im not aware of an App to do that (mainly because if anyone I know has done something like that I just ignore them on facebook :D )
