Guest userof2 Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 Hey, Recently my OLED model SF that I've had since December died. The OLED panel itself was damaged due to excessive pressure on the screen, I'm not sure exactly how it happened, but it's not covered by the warranty, so I'm going to have to fork out for a new one :D By now all the models in stock by any site are the TFT model, but I also have the option of buying the OLED model 2nd hand. I've managed to track a couple down, and it appears it would pretty much cost the same as buying a new TFT model. However, I'm worried about breaking the OLED model again, since I didn't really do anything excessive to it, yet the screen still cracked. Also, I'm slightly wary of buying a second hand phone. However, I have read that the TFT screen isn't as good as the OLED screen, and I have seen the videos comparing the two. So I was wondering, what's the best thing to do in my situation, considering that either model will cost me the same?
Guest ricer Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 Isnt the TFT actually higher resolution? Apparently the OLED versions use some kind of technical wizardry to produce the extra detail but the extra pixels arent actually there.

Yeah, I think the OLED does do something like that, but is still capable of the full 800x480 resolution. I'm not sure if this causes any visual differences when compared with the TFT model though. That's why I made this topic though, to ask people who've used both what the best option is.
Guest Mushroom_Lord Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 OLED is brighter, more crisp higher contrast. And yes, they both have the same resolution. OLED does do some sort of brick layered effect, but really there is virtually no difference, you can only tell when looking VERY closely. TFT MAY do this aswell, but I cant say im sure, I have the OLED model

Honestly, the screens on these San Frans are pretty great - I don't think you'll be disappointed with either.
Guest rbbrslmn Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Isnt the TFT actually higher resolution? no, this argument has been on here before and its based on someones fundamental misunderstanding.
Guest g-rasshopper Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 no, this argument has been on here before and its based on someones fundamental misunderstanding. It's not that clear cut. Most independent articles I've read on this subject come to the conclusion that pentile displays do indeed have a lower resolution (for example: link). But the issue is complex. I've looked at several OLED displays that use pentile matrix technology, and my perception was that text is definitely less crisp, especially at small point sizes. You can come up with as many technical arguments as you want, but what ultimately counts is how the human eye perceives the resolution.
