Guest blcollier Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Morning all - first post and all that :( First of all, many thanks to all those who have contributed to so many helpful threads/topics on here. If it wasn't for this community, I doubt I'd have bought the Vega at all! I've used XDA-Devs for many years now, but Modaco seems head and shoulders above the rest! :D First of all, my impressions of the stock ROM were pretty much as most of the reviews described: works really well as an "internet tablet", but not quite the full Android experience. The Modaco custom ROM however is a different league; even just having the small notifications bar and Market back is worth it. I can definitely see limitations of the screen, but it's a compromise that I'm prepared to live with: given that this tablet matches the spec of native Honeycomb devices, and will in all likelihood have some form of Honeycomb ROM built for it (whether ported from a clone, or built from scratch), it is an absolute bargain. I'd read quite a few threads on here about trouble with installing the ADB Bridge device drivers under Win7 x64, but at first I couldn't even get that far. Despite me spending about an hour with USBDeview, I could not get my PC to detect the ADB Bridge device. It picked up one Nvidia Tegra device, but the driver in use seemed to imply that it was for the tablet's USB Storage mode. I tried using the Advent restore process (listed on myadventvega), but that still didn't sort it. I even tried flashing using my Debian netbook, but even my netbook would not recognise it (though that's more likely to be a problem with my linux environment). Eventually, I decided to completely remove the Nvidia USB storage device it had picked up. Once I'd done that and reconnected, it picked up the ADB device first time and I had no trouble at all replacing the drivers. Really looking forward to seeing Honeycomb builds hitting this tablet now :(. Even if we don't get Honeycomb, I'll still be happy with it. PS, can anyone clarify the TV out situation? Reviews have said that it only outputs at 1024x600 res, but when I hooked up my vega the TV detected a 1080 source - though the display didn't actually look any more "high res". Looks like it might be outputting at 1080, but up-scaling the display. Not that I'm really bothered about the TV out, because playing a video on the tablet screen and replicating that on a 1080 screen really seemed to make the Vega struggle! (Hell, my PC sometimes struggles to output to 1080!)
Guest trevor432990 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 Hello and welcome to the forum ...... I'm not an expert on the video out front but in case you haven't read it already this topic might help to answer some of your questions :D

Like I said, I'm not really bothered about the HDMI output. It might come in handy now and then, but I'm not going to be using the Vega to play HD content through my TV - I already have a PC set up as a media box :D. As long as the Vega plays my media without a problem on it's own screen - which it does, mostly without the need to transcode - I'm more than happy. I was extremely impressed when I saw it playing a test video encoded in 1080p; many laptops struggle with flawless 1080p playback. Never mind iOS devices, someone get XBMC ported to Android and optimised for Tegra! :D

On a related note, have you tried the android XBMC remote application? You can get it from the marketplace, it is pretty good. What media player are you using? I tried playing a clip with default application and it was jerky...? Also, as a new VEGA owner too, I found the ADW launcher to be a huge improvement on the iLauncher, shame it is not the default launcher in MCR R8.
Guest Sanddancer75 Posted March 21, 2011 Report Posted March 21, 2011 There's mention of this on the XBMC forums & the devs don't sound too enthusiastic: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=84194&page=2 I think it would be a great fit personally.

Yeah, I've used the XBMC remote app on my desire, and its pretty awesome. Though a full port of XBMC has been released for jailbroken ipads, and it would be nice to have the same for Android tablets - especially with the power that Tegra offers... Using the built in media player, many of my videos work perfectly. Though it does depend on the codec and container format; this is one of the reasons I want a codec/container agnostic video player on Android, preferably with hardware acceleration (obviously the latter is device dependant)
