I am running MCR r12(android 2.2) rom on my orange san francisco. When i tried to activate 3G for orange san francisco, the service provider(vodafone India) told that san francisco has 3G R99 device but vodafone 3G requires HSPA device. The specification of Orange san francisco clearly states that it has HSPDA. So could any of you pls tell whether this is a software issue on my phone or is HSPA not supported on orange san francisco?

HSDPA is supported on the Orange San Francisco on all roms, the problem is with your provider. They probably don't recognise the name of the phone, because it's not sold in India, tell them it is similar to the Dell XCD35 which is sold in India.

Thanks for the reply. I have asked my service provider regarding this. In the meantime I found a link( http://androinica.com/2009/12/hack-for-roo...er-2g3g-speeds/ ) regarding some hack to enable HSPA in android phones for improved speeds. Will this work on orange san francisco? I'm asking this because I didn't find any of the entries mentioned in that link in build.prop file in my phone.

It wont have any effect, but you don't need it, your san francisco already supports hsdpa.

Thanks. Finally convinced the operator that my device supports HSDPA and activated 3G.:D..But when I enable data, i'm getting only the symbol E(for EDGE). Isn't it supposed to be displayed as 3G or H? I checked the settings menu and "Use only 2G networks" is unchecked. Also i checked the download speed and it was only about 0.19 mbps. Is there any other setting to enable 3G in the device?

Edge is not 3g (It is a faster form of 2g, but still 2g)

In mobile networks settings try selecting the "only use 3g networks (WCDMA? something like that)

Also check that you are in a 3g coverage zone :D

Also your APN has to be set-up with your mobile operator settings to be able to access 3g

Thanks. Now 3G is active on my device.. :D I checked the speed using speedtest and I am getting a download speed of about 2.2 mbps. Is that OK? What is the maximum possible download speed? Also I checked under Settings-->About Phone-->Status and my mobile network type is displayed as UMTS. Is it normal or should it be displayed as HSPA? [FYI I'm getting only 3G icon while using data and not 3G+/H]

The SF (Like some other android devices) doesn't always switch between the two icons. So even if you are on H the phone will display 3g, the cyanogen mod and some froyo roms just display H even if your on 3g :D

My network (T-Mobile) limit all customers to 2mbs, anything around that is normal and if you get more bully for you :D
