XML file editing

Please help.

I would like to customise an apk that is opensource for learning purposes.

I have opened the apk by renaming to zip and extracting.

Whats the best way to edit the XML documents?

Cant open the file from word or IE (states incorrect character in line one) and notepad shows the data in an unusable state.

Sounds stupid but When recreating the apk, can i just rearchive the new contents and rename to .apk.

Does it have to be resigned or is that just for market apps.

use apk tool to decompile the xml properly

never use word..

notepad ++ is the tool in windows..

google is your friend
