I have a nice shiny new Vega to replace the one I dropped and cracked the screen on..the question is though what to do wth the broken one?

I vote that you open it up and take it apart completely taking lots of pictures!

Concentrating heavily on the inside of the dock connector to see if there is a way to bring a USB cable off it to mount a 3G dongle internally!

Thats what i'd do! :D

Does it still work if you connect the HDMI to a TV. If so you could use it as a games console/browser for TV/iPlayer for TV etc. etc you'd need a wireless mouse/keyboard but apart from that you can still make use of it or sell it for spares as I'm sure a lot of people here would be interested :D

Do you still have this, and if so would you be interested in parting with the back cover?

Thank-you for the interest but I would rather sell it as a whole.

Plug it into a screen using HDMI and run linux on it, you can plug in an external drive, run Apache webserver, mySQL, media servers for sharing movies and music on wifi etc. Even run a personal wiki on it :-)

And how much would you be wanting to depart with it for?

Nopee it bans the direct selling of items, not the discussion of how much something is to be sold for

paint it black and use it as a portable chalk board

It's easily repairable. I bought a cracked screen Vega and a replacement screen and got it all up and running without too much fuss.

A new screen will cost you about 40-45 pounds on ebay. Here's the one I bought: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...3#ht_3889wt_989

The next step is to get the back off the Vega, which is not hard (four screws in the corners) and prise it off. It will come, but you'll need to get a screwdriver under one corner to get it started.

When you get the back off there will be the large black battery centre right, the motherboard centre left, with a Z shaped cable running to the screen. At the bottom left you will see the small brown ribbon cable that is the touch screen connector - pay attention to that and how it is inserted!

There are twelve screws around the outside of the gubbins, which you'll need to remove, along with two very short screws on the motherboard. Gentle remove the cable from the screen (at the bottom centre), and the touch screen cable and then you can lever the innards up using the far side as a fulcrum. You can now loft and remove the screen, and drop in the new one. Make sure, however, that you clean the inside of the touchscreen _really_ carefully as this will stop it from working. Compressed air is your friend here.

The new screen drops into place snugly, and then you can gently lower the main board and gubbins again. It all fits into place nicely, so if you have to force anything, go back and start again. Reattach the screen cable (you'll have to make sure this is on firmly or it won't work) and the touch screen ribbon. Put it all together and reboot.

Bingo.

Alternatively, sell the broken one to me and I'll do it :P

Hope that helps, Ian

Thanks Ian, that seemed quite straightforward, did the replacement screen that you mention also have the glass front from the vega though, I seem to recall reading that the glass is glued onto the bezel and is a pig to remove?

FWIW the screen and touch panel are both working fine, its only the glass front which is damaged, so everything works fine.. it just looks a mess!

Ah, that's different. I was working on the idea that your screen was toast.

The front screen is a standard one, from what I can recall. If you look at the other threads about the touch panel not working there's a link to the Chinese manufacturer. The touch panel is separate from the LCD screen.

From what I could see, it's glued in place, but a blast from a hairdryer and some judicious prising can get that off. Then it's a case of glueing the new one into the front frame, reconnecting everything and putting it all back together. The hardest part is plugging the ribbon cable in. If you search for my posts I explained how I got mine working again in more detail in one of them. I don't have that many!

Unfortunately the hardest part will be getting the replacement front part :P I haven't been able to find a source in europe or the far east. The front glass and the touch panel are one and the same thing - if your glass is broken you need to replace the whole front bezel which will include the glass and the touch panel. Based on my experience, broken front glass = unrepairable

The model you linked to in the other post seems to be the right one - the ribbon and placement certainly look good for it. The model number is 101H11A1

Over at Pandawill they are saying that they can source the new glass (these are the guys who are pimping a Vega running Vegacomb for 450 dollars!) They are talking about it at this link: http://www.pandawillforum.com/blog/high-en...-dual-core-cpu/

Perhaps talking to their sales people is the next step?

Good luck, Ian

how is the quality of that screen (i.e viewing angles) compared to the original that comes with the vega?

I don't know, because I got the Vega broken! However, I've seen a friend's unit and it's not that dissimilar. The only think that I've noticed is that the viewing angle from _below_ is not great, you really need to be looking at the screen from almost above (if that makes sense). Remember that it's a laptop screen, and you are usually looking at them from slightly above.

I got a very cheap iPad stand from Poundsaver (for, yes, one pound) which holds the Vega at the best angle for watching.

Aside from that, the screen is fine. Does what it needs to do :P

I'm the "Colm" who is asking about it in there :P Every google reference to 101h11a1 outside of the two Taiwanese sites has been originated by me unfortunately <_< I have emailed those two sites, the actual manufacturer (both in Taiwan and their European distributor), shuttle (the original OEM), Viewsonic europe, POV in holland and various parts sellers on ebay all to no avail. At this stage I am committed to getting the new Samsung 10.1 (which looks gorgeous!) but I would still buy this part if I can get it for under 100e. So if anyone does manage to source it please post in here

Hi Ian Kendall,

I managed to find a replacement screen for my Vega -exactly the same model on eBay- after smashing the original one by accident.

I just replaced the screen as the touch panel didn't suffer any visible damage. The new screen works absolutely fine, but the touch panel doesn't.

It kind of responds top some touches on the left hand side opening the search box and randomly scrolling across screens.

I haven't glued the screen to the touch panel so I'm not sure if this is the reason. I have used, however, a can of compressed air to get rid of the dust and have deattached and reattached the ribbon several times.

Any ideas? Do you have a picture of how the ribbon cable looks when properly attached?

Any help would be brilliant.

I can use it with the docking station, but there's no point in having a tablet you cannot touch.

May not be of use but have you tried running the screen calibration app ?(using a mouse of course)
