Guest HelloDave Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Well that's it, yesterday my trusty first SPV finally gave up on me, or rather I was struck by the "broken switch in headphone socket" bug so my phone was stuck in "headset" profile. I tried the changing homescreen fix but that didn't help; it was an actual hardware fault - pushing on the socket with my thumbnail would briefly bring the phone back to "Normal" mode. I think this could have happened because I regularly use a 2.5 to 3.5mm headphone adaptor which sticks out quite a bit from my phone and over the past few months this must have bent the socket far enough for it not to work anymore  (crap design!). This led to an interesting call to O tech support because stupidly I decided to phone them on my SPV using the headset, and managed to move the plug mid-call, which resulted in the mic cutting out totally but the headphones still working. All I could hear was the guy at the other end saying "are you there sir? hello?" for a while with me shouting "HELLO!" but he couldn't hear me! Eventually I had to call back on another phone, he sorted it out, and I should have a replacement later today. Then the real problems started! I wanted to back up my old phone fully before I got rid of it, so I put in my spare MMC and started the phone in bootloader mode. The card had an old backup on it, so the phone started with the screen "Card found, pboot, IPSM, GSM, WINCE. Press action to download". Being used to the normal bootloader I pressed the action key, and the phone came up with "pboot success", and stupid me thought "damn, I don't want that, I'll restart" - BIG mistake! What I didn't realise was that when you put in a card containing a full backup the phone is actually asking you on that first screen if you want to download the whole thing, so I'd switched it off halfway through flashing windows CE. Result - an unbootable phone! Even worse was that after turning the phone off I'd gone straight back into the bootloader and saved everything, so my card now contained a corrupt Win CE image (though the phone was quite happy to load it and report a "success") Luckily I'd saved some old bakcups from memory cards onto my PC using WinHex (trial version) but I had to buy the full version to be able to load the images back onto my memory card (sneaky!). Once i'd loaded a good full image onto the phone i could then reload just my (latest) IPSM from the full backup i'd messed up containing the corrupt Win CE image (but the IPSM was ok) and back up the lot again. I now have a working phone, but I was lucky! Main points i'm trying to make here (not wanting to sound like a user with a name not dissimilar to F.R.Lion :)) - 1) It is quite safe to use WinHex to backup and resore phone images from a memory card using a card reader. 2) Be very careful in the bootloader, and if you start the phone up with a card already containing a valid phone backup press right to get to the normal boot menu. If you accidentally press the action key so the screen says "downloading pboot success" make sure you wait until the screen says passed and the keys work again before you switch the phone off, otherwise you are very likely to kill it! 3) Always wait for the bootloader to finish whatever it's doing (ie keys respond again) before you switch the phone off.

Heh I did that. Fortunately the SD card backup still worked, and I was able to re-restore...
Guest neilg Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 sounds like your phone went the same way as mine (headphone profile etc)......I am STILL waiting for Orange to replace it, they seem to be a bit overloaded at the moment.....how many SPV's sold....that could be some load of returns!
Guest DJHope Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 yep i knew that would happen if it starts restoring a backup and you interrupt it make sense that its gonna die. Never interrupt a computer whilst is doing something especially install/badckup restore and upgrades, or you could learn the hard way, however its also a good time to do some "cracking" as with the cert removal trick... If you mess with it during the "downloading pboot" bit i imagine you are completely screwed. In the words of one SPV Sage, don't mess with the bootloader, spv death will almost certainly occur! Guest HelloDave Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Just got my replacement - i've now got a working SPV with no scratches :) It's even got the little bit of plastic over the IR window! All I needed to do was restore the IPSM to get the phone to exactly how my old one was, it's even de-certed. I knew that 8mb SD had to be useful for something!
