Preserving apps when changing ROMs

Ok, nice noob question.....

Been using an older version of flb's ROM for a while and want to begin playing, either with it's final version, SS or CM ROMs.

I'm OK with the process to update the ROM, but how would I backup / restore any apps and more crucially, their data, i.e Angry Birds progress etc.

Is it as simple as using Titanium Backup first, and then reinstalling that and restoring the backups after the ROM upgrade, i.e they back up the app AND it's data ?

How about for stuff like Contacts and SMS ?

I assume I can Export my contacts to SD Card and reimport afterwards or just run a fresh sync to Google before and they will come back automatically.

Anything for SMS ?

And I am missing anything else obvious ?

Cheers....

SMS Backup+ does SMS backups. google does contacts if you backup with google.

It is probably best to reinstall the apps and then restore the data with Titanium. People have reported probs when restoring apps from TB.

contacts: export to sd card. then on new rom: import from sd card

apps: backup with titanium. then on new rom: restore (if you do app + data progress on games will be restored)

NB: ON TITANIUM ONLY RESTORE APPS OR GAMES THAT YOU HAVE INSTALLED YOURSELF. NO SYSTEM DATA OR YOU WILL SCREW UP THE NEW ROM

sms: search the market for any sms backup app such as 'sms backup and restore' then hit: backup. on new rom: restore

sorted :D

I believe you can also back up your messages using Titanium backup as well - at least, it worked for me when I tried Cyanogen Mod 2.3(moved back to 2.2, until it's more stable)

Yes.. Titanium backs up messages as well. A reboot is needed after restoring the messages. Only then you can see them.

I assume that is stuff I have installed from the market, as opposed to any apps that came with the ROM (like Google Maps etc)....

Cheers for the suggestions all - Should make life a lot easier when switching ROMs....

Looks like that App is no longer available.

Any other suggestions for a 'single click' backup app ?

Cheers

erm generally yes.

but... you can backup system apps its just titanium isn.t so good at this. NB: google apps like maps dont need backing up as they come on virtually all roms (and there are seperate packages on roms which don't include them like cm7)

just don't hit 'backup all system data + apps +....etc" as this when restored, on a different rom, will almost certainly screw up certain things like wifi and like, and can even cause a complete re-flash to be neeeded

Yep, Google Maps was the example for apps that came on the ROM.

I've been having a closer look and to be honest I reckon there isn't a lot app wise to back up apart from the 3 Angry Birds (addicted to that) and half a dozen other apps that I have settings in... Everything else I can just regrab from the market....

Now gotta find a spare hour or two to decide between Swedish Spring or Cyanogen (or try both) and then get stuff re-installed....

Haha, i faced the same decision when the first nightlies were out. after getting annoyed at rc2's bugs i decided to try SS. which by the way, is very good. however, after a bit (3 days) you want cyanogen back again! i'd say try both for at least 2 days. but you will alomost definatly end up missing cm7 :D
