Guest yatpeak Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 Hi, My SPV died yesterday, and when I turned it on it had lost some of it's settings. Not all of them(not like a hard reset for example), but it lost my Data Connection settings and it changed my home screen back to the default one(but I still had my other homescreens). it left the shortcuts and games intact, except that it deleted my high scores for Invasion(but not Slurp). Anyone know what's going on? Thanks, Wyatt
Guest Bazz Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 This happened to me a couple of times over christmas. It seem to restore all the deafults, but leave all the extras in tact. No idea why.
Guest D4LE Posted February 11, 2003 Report Posted February 11, 2003 does it not say somewhere in the guide that if you do not power (i know its not exactly the same situation) the phone down properly then it can lose some of the data? just a thought :?

Yep, says so in the manual. Same can happen if you let the battery go totally flat. Happened to me a couple of times pre-update.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 12, 2003 Report Posted February 12, 2003 Heh, i've ripped my battry out countless times and not lost data. At a guess i'd say if the app was running when you pulled that battery you may have some problems...
Guest yatpeak Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 Big problem. Since that happened my SPV has started dying within a few seconds of entering my password. Has anyone had a problem like this before? It seems really bad. Thanks, Wyatt
Guest Rog Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 Sounds like a dodgy 'phone. I have ripped my battery out like Mono on many occaisions and never lost dataor settings. Time for a replacement? - best be quick if there is any chance the update fixes the decert trick!
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 Big problem. Since that happened my SPV has started dying within a few seconds of entering my password. Has anyone had a problem like this before? It seems really bad I may be wrong here, but this sounds just too familiar...sounds like you've fried your battery, mate. Did the same with my old SL45, with bizarre behaviour as a result. That also did the "turn on/code/start/turn off" trick  Try running the battery totally dry then recharging....
Guest castlebrae Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 you could rig up a couple of wires and a smal bulb to discharge the battery fully. however i thought these new batteries didn't have the memory problems of the older batteries?

Posted February 14, 2003 Report Posted February 14, 2003 you could rig up a couple of wires and a smal bulb to discharge the battery fully. however i thought these new batteries didn't have the memory problems of the older batteries? Technically, no. In reality, yes - although NiMh and Li-Ion are far less susceptible to that type of failure. My point was that all the symptoms indicate a shorted (fried) battery rather than a simple "memory" problem....I just mentioned the discharge/recharge method in case ol' Yatpeak hasn't tried it yet.
Guest fraser Posted February 20, 2003 Report Posted February 20, 2003 you could rig up a couple of wires and a smal bulb to discharge the battery fully. Woah! Never do that! You will do some serious damage to the battery. The battery consists of several cells hooked up in series, each one is slightly different. If you hook up a bulb, one of the cells will reach 0 Volts before the others. When that happens, it will begin to be reverse charged (opposite polarity) by it's neighbours. That is really bad and it will destroy thats cells ability to hold a decent charge. And you get a catch-22 situation, as it will always be the first to discharge. Another thing to watch out for is re-charging the phone again after a full charge. When a battery of this type becomes fully charged, the voltage begins to drop again. This is how the charger knows that it is fully charged. If you hook up a fully charged battery to the charger, this negative delta cannot be detected properly and you run the risk of indefinatly charging the battery to it's destruction. I did some reading the other day on preserving battery life. The best thing to do with these LiIon batteries apparently is to allow for a normal full discharge (until you get the low battery warning) every now and then. The example I read was once a week. If you do that, you can top up the phone every day without much of a memory effect. Allegedly. :) I got this info from this site. The SPV has a LiIon battery, which the most expensive but best battery commonly available.
Guest yatpeak Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Now comes the really strange part. I did a hard reset and everything in working fine. :) I'm really pleased but I just can't see how a hard reset fixed a problem that seems to have to do with the power. Anyway, thanks for your help, Wyatt
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 It's Windows. If its broke you don't fix it, you just format and reload. *shrugs*
Guest SirGaz Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Or buy the next version that is twice as big, three times as power hugry and has less features.
Guest HelloDave Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Maybe he means less features that actually work 90% of the time?
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Whats wrong with the command prompt?
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Whats wrong with the command prompt? Absolutely nowt :) Little command-prompt thing like netstat and tracert are great. Better than windows-based apps that do the same (and take up a couple of meg HD space)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 My point exactly, the question was aimed at SirGaz. The removal of DOS was the best thing to happen to Windows since they implemented a GUI...
Guest Chris b.a.r.f. Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 My point exactly, the question was aimed at SirGaz I know, was just backing you up, dude : )
Guest Big Ron - No Longer a Mem Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 You can overcome the memory effect in NicCads by putting them in the freezer for a while. However I don't commend that for SPV batteries. (Freezing also increases nylon tights' run-resistance!)
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted February 21, 2003 Report Posted February 21, 2003 Hehe sorry Chris, i know. (Notice the lack of response from SirGaz)
