Guest Society Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I promise you that I've searched but haven't found a full explanation of the six-key widget that I see where the order seems to be: wi-fi, bluetooth, gps, data, sync, brightness. Is there a 1:1 correspondence between these keys and individual toggles in the Settings or does any key toggle more than one setting? I haven't been able to satisfactorily identify the precise meanings and relationship of the data and sync functions. Does deactivating the former prevent all usage of the mobile network for data but still allow autosync over wi-fi (assuming wi-fi and sync are enabled)? Does syncing over a data connection before disabling data make a difference? What about "Background data" if data is disabled? "gps" seems to toggle solely the "Use GPS satellites" function but apparently has no effect on the "Use wireless networks" switch for determining location. I suspect I've confused myself when looking through Settings to see what changes when keys are toggled and then testing certain functions so would appreciate a clue or two from those who know such things.

I was using the Widget for data for two weeks before I knew what it was doing. As it has the shape of a SD data card I wrongly thought it was turning read / write on and off to the data card. Then one day I installed the app 3G Watchdog and noticed that the 3G watchdog icon disappeared from the notification bar when the data widget icon was off. Investigating more I found that the SD data symbol was turning GMS / 3G data on and off the same as going to > Setting > Wireless & networks setting > Mobile network settings > and ticking Data enabled. Now I know what this Widget does it saves a lot time in navigating this menu, that is more important as of today with GiffGaff charging for data.
