Camera Auto Focus - select area of interest

Hi,

The HTC Desire HD standard camera app allows the user to select the area to focus on by touching the screen at that location and the auto focus then focuses on that point. This feature would be extremely useful in my app which requires that the area of interest within the image be transmitted along with the image itself.

I can't find any reference to an API for this functionality nor any means of doing it longhand. Does anyone know anything about this?
