Hi,

Does anybody know if there is an mp3 app that will allow mp3's to be played from an external hardrive. I have tried a few trail mp3's apps but can only access mp3's from the sd card.

Many Thanks

I think you don't need any new mp3 software.

Let' check what I think you want to do:

1) Have the Advent Vega powered up

2) Connect a USB storage device (like a hard drive or flash drive)

3) Play music on the Vega using file held on the USB storage device (like a hard drive or flash drive)

If this is correct then you need to change your USB port from slave to host. Out of the box or with most custom roms the Vega acts as a USB slave. ie. you plug it into a PC / MAC etc and it appears as a storage device.

What you want to do is plug a USB storage device (like a hard drive or flash drive) into the Advent Vega so the Vega is the host and the USB storage device (like a hard drive or flash drive) is the slave.

There are kernals and apps on the Modaco site for doing this. From what I understand you need to reboot the Vega into host mode. Then plug in the USB storage device (like a hard drive or flash drive) and you will be good to go. There are a cople of things to remember

1) The USB port on the Vega may not provide sufficient power to drive an external hard disk so you might want to use an external PSU for the external drive.

2) A drive that works fine on PC without power may not work on a tablet due to the reduced power available on the USB port.

3) If you do not power the external device from the mains (via an adaptor) and the external drive works the load on the Vega battery is increase significantly and you batter life and longevity may be impacted.

Pyr0x64 -"just check your kernel version in settings>about device

if it says DIX_UK at the end, then you are in slave mode

if it says POV, then you are in host mode"

Utility from Paul I assume you are on a custom rom

Hi,

Yes I have no problem playing the music from the folder on my external hardive, but I dont want to manually click a file each time I want it to play. I would rather an mp3 app could pick up the files, so i can have playlist, etc. At the moment all the players I have tried will only allow the sd card file path. It will not pick up the files from an external drive path.

Thanks

Alternatively and assuming you are listening to your music collection at home you could just stream the music from your PC to the Vega as it is dead easy. I use Gmote app on the PC and Vega and once connected you can browse your music collection and play it over wi-fi. Not sure if a playlist is available but it will play through all tracks in a given folder without stopping so this may suffice?

It would depends on the player. I use poweramp which you can tell which folders to scan for music and include in its library but the stock one while ok doesn't have that feature. Winamp would probably do it as well.

Hi thanks for the info. I don't really want to have my pc turned on everytime I want to listen to music. I just have all my files on and external drive, but maybe in the future I may need some system like that.

Thanks anyway

Thanks, but I am not that familuar with how scripts work.

Thanks

That's Ok neither am I..

From what I've read a script is a set of instructions, in this case the link provided enables USB host mode. There is an associated script to reverse this.

No to run the script you need to add the capability to run scripts to Android by installing a program from the Market called gScript

http://code.google.com/p/gscript-android/

So to enable USB Host mode on the Vega you need to

1) Install gScript

2) Download the script to enable host mode

3) Run gScript and provide it with the host mode script

4) Enjoy the host mode where plugging a storage device into the Vega's USB port provide access to the files on the storage device.

that link doesn't enable usb-host.

what script 1 does is make the advent vega think the USB hard drive is just another folder on the sdcard.
