Guest flipperitis Posted April 9, 2011 Report Posted April 9, 2011 Hey there guys, just a quick question that needs some clearing up. I'll be travelling to Italy in May and would like to continue to use my Blade there. I've looked at several SIM options for international data plans (Vodafone's International Roaming, in particular), but would like to know of any suggestions you mightily-more experienced people may have. Is there any PAYG plan out there that allows me to connect to the internet whilst abroad (without incurring massive charges :) ) that you would highly recommend? I'm running CM Nightly 33. Thanks a bunch! :)
Guest Len Ash Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 (edited) Since this is a generic question rather than phone specific, I would suggest you ask in the General section of the MoDaCo forum - more exposure too. Edited April 10, 2011 by Len Ash
Guest looun Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 3 (H3g) http://www.three.co.uk/Home Abroad as at home. Abroad at home is the third option that allows you to enjoy the same national tariffs when you connect with the operators of 3 Austria Australia Denmark Great Britain Hong Kong Ireland Sweden The option is already active and free for all customers. http://translate.google.it/translate?u=htt...l=&ie=UTF-8 from italy to UK work ! ( i'm italy ) i don't now if work from uk to italy?
Guest flipperitis Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 Thanks for the replies guys. @lanceh Will do, I'll move the topic to the general board. @looun I'm currently on 3 UK, but they do not allow for international roaming. I suppose 3 Italy is much more comprehensive :) I'll keep my search up, thanks for the reply!
Guest Wilburtron Posted April 10, 2011 Report Posted April 10, 2011 I used to work in Italy, although I'm afraid I never had anything other than an ancient UK bought mobile and the cheapest PAYG text deal (WIND) so my knowledge of their mobile internet sevices is virtually zilch, but everyone uses WIND or TIM. If you don't speak italian then it's more difficult to set up a italian sim to work for you what with the texts you'll receive to activate things etc. http://www.wind.it/it/internetmobile/pagin...tml?sez=Privati or http://www.tim.it/consumer/c56088/i56323/o...4031/tariffa.do Perhaps just ask a store salesperson who speaks English to set it up for you...

It's not true. Setting up an italian sim is the same to setting up others. Parameters are the same. Look at wikipedia and you found the settings for all italian operators. I recommend a 3 ITA operator plan. Now there is a 3 ITA prepay sim that you can buy for 10€ and has included 60 min dialing x month and 50 MB x day, without any other cost or constraits. 3 ITA is the cheapest italian operator.

I suppose 3 Italy is much more comprehensive :) I'll keep my search up, thanks for the reply! Eh... I went to Cyprus, South Korea and the USA and used my 3 UK phone quite happily (till I changed over to GiffGaff in Dec). Was a fortune everywhere but Cyprus, but worked fine. I was on a contract (not PAYG) so I'm not sure if this makes a difference or if you've been misinformed?

The PAYG SIM is called Smartpack Gold, and for only 10€ plus a small pre-payed traffic is a real bargain.
Guest lpra Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Hello, I was in Milan a few weeks ago, bought myself a TIM sim. 10 Euros for the sim with 5 Euros credit included, 2 more to get it set up on their data plan which gives you 250MB per week for 2 Euros a week. It automatically takes it from the 5 that comes with the sim. Did the trick for me anyway, and thankfully found a friendly (ish) salesman who spoke some English. Oh, and 3g Watchdog was a gem - I'd gotten used to giffgaff and not worrying about data! Good luck!
Guest flipperitis Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 (edited) Thanks so very much for all the replies, much appreciated. :) @Swimmerboy I think I may have been given wrong information. I'm on a contract with 3 as well. I contacted 3's online help personnel and was told that they don't have international roaming. May give it a go but as you say, the charges incurred wouldn't be a pretty sight :) . @Wilburton, Coyote74, thehobbit78 and lpra Thanks for all that information, very useful :) I'm definitely checking those plans out. It'd be great to limit my usage to its bare bones. I won't be making any calls as I only need the internet. Great bunch of people here, many thanks! Gavin Edited April 11, 2011 by flipperitis
